I want to put a flowmaster system on my 1997 F250 with 4.6L engine. The muffler shop says i won't get alot of sound out of it because of the OEM Cat Convertor on it. Is this true? I'm not looking for something that will rattle the windows a mile away, just a nice rumble at idle and a good tone when accelerating. The muffler shop suggests a 3" in and 2.5" duals out using a 40 Series muffler. What do you think?
I disagree, the Flowmaster will get you an awesome sound even with the OEM cats one it. If you decide it is too quite, then you can consider replacing the OEM cats. I think a 2.5" in and 2.5" dual out would be slightly better. The 4.6L is a relatively small V8, and I think that 3" is too large. Each is entitle to their own opinions, but the 2.5" is cheaper and I think it is more than adequate.
The 40 series muffler is plenty loud, in fact I know a lot of people remove them later on because they are too loud. Since you still have the factory cats, I think it will create a nice volume level.

Thanks for your opinion. The muffler shop says the exhaust valves on a 4.6 don't open very much and the OEM cat muffles alot of the sound. I was thinking of going with a Delta Flow 40 series muffler. I jsut want to make sure what ever muffler I get it isn't so loud that my neighbors will complain, or that I can't hear the radio while driving.
Exit the exhaust behind the rear axle somewhere and it will not be overly loud. A single 2.5" in Dual 2.5" out muffler will be more than enough for the little 4.6l.
The Flowmaster 50 series SUV is a very nice sounding muffler as well with chambers to help reduce drone. I would also look at the Dynomax ultra-flo. The ultra-flow will not sound as tinny as the Flowmaster and flows 3 times more than the Flowmaster.
Well you can either get rid of the cat or get a highflow cat i think cats these days muffle exhaust to a degree but probably not a big difference in sound with cats on or off
I think you would be surprised with the tone you get with that 4.6, its a pretty power packed engine for its size, and i think it will bark plenty for your taste even with stock cats. It would be a descent sized project to replace the originals cats, so unless your very commited to paying an exhaust shop to swap your original cats with hi flow ones like dustin said, its not worth replacing them. Like bear river and dfk said, run a 2 1/2 inch inlet, and dual 2 1/2in outlet muffler, and that combo should give you the vaacum and air speed you will need to make a flowmaster or ultra flow typed baffled muffler bark plenty. good luck man
