Installing Rear 58 F100 Custom Cab Window

Can anyone tell me how to keep the gasket around the rear window so I can get the stainless trim installed and then the window in the cab without the gasket coming off the window.

Today I got the gasket around the window but had to use duck tape to hold it in place on the curves.

I can't imagine how I am going to get the stainless trim installed into the gasket and keep it around the window.

Could sure use some help.

Ira,

I don't want you to think I am being a smart a** but maybe you should have a pro do this job. That is if you can still find someone who knows how to do the old style windows. I am sure there are still a few out there. I have installed quite a few flat windows. The windshield in my '49 has the stainless trim from a '51-2 Five Star cab and it was a real pain, I can only imagine what a curved glass must be like. An experienced installer probably have in it the truck in half an hour for $50, a price I think is well worth the aggrevation. If you don't know how to install it yourself you just might end up breaking it, which is very easy to do, then you'll be out the cost of the glass and will have to look for a new one. If your truck isn't driveable many glass places will come to your location.

Good luck.

The Stainless Steel Trim Is Your Friend

I successfully installed the rear window with stainless steel trim. First mark the center of the window using the stainless trim as a guide. Find the seam and position it at the bottom. Work the gasket on 1/2 of the bottom. The secret is to put the rubber gasket on 1/4 of the window at a time and use Duct Tape to secure it. Next insert the stainless steel trim removing the duck tape as needed and then use duct tape to secure the rubber gasket with the stainless steel trim. On the corner roll the gasket back to help keep it on the edge of the glass. After doing 1/4 of the gasket move to the opposite side on the bottom. Then to the top of the window doing 1/4 at a time using duct tape to secure it. When the stainless is installed you can remove the duct tape and everything will stay in place. The stainless steel trim is your friend when putting a rubber gasket on a wrap around 58 ford custom rear window. I used cotton clothesline soaked in linseed oil inserted in the outside groove of the gasket to rope it in. I held the window in place and pushed over the area while my help pulled the rope out pulling the gasket over the lip of the cab opening. Wish I could post pictures because I got the process photographed.

Be glad to send pictures to anyone who wants them.

Hope this helps future wrap around rear window installs for 58 custom cabs.
