At present about 15K/ year, half of which is done at speeds of 30MPH or less due to equipment. Hauling 4-5 ton at anything faster would be too hard to control. Not to mention the majority of gears have too loose of tolerances in the tie rods and bearings to allow it to be safe even with brakes.
Ok - I do around 80k miles a year... a radio is mandatory equipment!

As for what you use your truck for - my Super Duty had a similar life cycle (only doing 70-80k miles per year), but doing it at 90mph (yes, disc trailer brakes on all 3 axles, and no speed limits )

Newer trucks can work too

I know what you are saying... Ford has had some of the worst transmission for years. I don't know if they are any better these days though.

[quote=dkf]I 2nd the motor, its bulletproof, but the trannies suck and don't last.

My sisters 95' with 161k took a tranny at 50k, and 160k.

Moms 03' Expl took a tranny at 50k. Tranny shop says there a new Valve body mod hes been installing on Explorer cop cars lately and helps the shifting and longevity.

Explorers are the only ones me and my family have ever had tranny problems with. We are a Ford only family as are most of my neighbors.

If the Tranny went at 50,000 miles she must not have changed the fluid and the filter. And my Explorer has 74,000 miles on it and it stills shifts just like the day I bought it....Mine is an "03" Try Maintaining does a lot of good..

It was my moms car before my sister bought it at 140k. The tranny fluid was changed regularly and maintained properly, so that theory is out. The guy at the tranny shop is always working on explorer trannies, he had an 06' Merc mountaineer at the shop when I was there that needed a rebuild already. Tranny problems are common on the Explorers, thats coming from tranny shops and dealer techs. Both the 03' and 95' had problems in the 1st to 2nd shifts, of course most dealers don't do rebuilds they put in a reman.

Well I drive my Explorer like a mad man..Slamming it in Reverses and putting my foot into it and never had an issue...

The older Explorers had Tranny problems but newer ones are stronger
