That's funny, the C6 in my 77 has an aluminum case, the floorboards are shot, I had to replace the bed because it had no floor and the wheelwells were gone. It runs great, has an aluminum intake manifold too. I has a 460 with 3.50 gears. My 5.4L tows almost as good, would out tow it with 4.10 gears. The difference?
My 01 is much quieter, the cab actually gets warm in the winter, has 4x4 and is a supercab. It stops much better with much larger brakes and 4 wheel disk. The 77 gets 6mpg and the 01 gets 14.5mpg. The 77 weighs 4480lbs. The 01 weighs about 5230lbs
There are many 5.4L engines out there with over 500,000 miles on them. They last a very long time. The 3.8L Ford V6 has been around since the early 80's and other than a few head gasket problems(usually from overheating), there were no metal problem with these engines. They even evolved into the 4.2L that was used up until 09 in the trucks.
Aluminum heads disipate heat better and are less prone to detonation so you can run a little more compression or timing and make more power.
I enjoy driving both vehicles, but the 77 seems so primative compared to my 01.
I'm not knocking the old trucks or the new trucks. I like them both, but times are changing and so are the goodies available on new vehicles.
I hope to get at least 300.000 miles on my Explorer before I pass her off to someone else...4.0 is a great motor

look, I like the new electronics as far as entertainment cd player and such.. , but when it comes to reliability.... i do not believe they are reliable.. water, corrosion, static, chaffed wires, and just about any other little thing can ruin the computers or throw the sensors off and cause them not to run or fail, ive seen quite a few electronic injected vehicles go through water holes offroad to be towed away later.

Points weren't exactly renowned for 100% trouble-free operation either....

Look, I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead, just come back another time. I got a meeting with the Bob's in a couple minutes.
My question was that I recall Jackson used to be the official Ford truck country music spokesperson a few years back, and was wondering why and when Ford switched to Toby Keith?
Maybe its because Alan was yesterday's news and Toby was the superstar....

I definatly like tobys older hits, his new stuff is kinda boring. Best new on is imma get my drink on. Other than that i like the old stuff. Like early 90's when he had a mullett lmao...

I 2nd the motor, its bulletproof, but the trannies suck and don't last.
My sisters 95' with 161k took a tranny at 50k, and 160k.
Moms 03' Expl took a tranny at 50k. Tranny shop says there a new Valve body mod hes been installing on Explorer cop cars lately and helps the shifting and longevity.
I like Tobys older hits as well. Mike Rowe is now signed with Ford as well and I think hes a good guy to push the trucks. "Dirty Jobs" is a good show IMO and they have F-150s on the show quite a bit.
lol elemint. Go drive a prius you redneck hater. I bet you are a liberal also?
Yes, i think toby helps sell the truck. He started as a poor, laborer just like a whole load of people from the us. Hes a common man, a hard worker and a role model to many. I think people do look up to him, thus thinking if toby would sport it... why couldnt/shouldnt I.
Way better than that dude from american idle. That dude should hook up with elemint. Probably make a good couple : D

Remeber in the old days Bob Vila used to have Fords on his show..And now he went to GMC...

Personally, he does nothing to influence me to buy fords. My father and uncle have only ever had ford trucks and i grew up with ford trucks, so I buy nothing but ford trucks. I don't need anyone to help sell them to me but the reputation they have upheld for many years as being the best, hardest working and toughest trucks out there.

What influence's me to buy Fords is how the Dealer has treated me and as well as the trucks them self's..The are sglaine proven...

Ford's problem is not that it market's to the high end. Their problem is that they think everyone wants a high end truck.
They still offer the XL don't they???
Quote:
I'm not argueing that. I'm simply saying that until Ford offers to meet the "base" consumer they will continue to fall. They are now 3rd in the US at last check.
Until they offer products to meet consumers in general they will fall.
I have a question - What company overtook Ford to take 2nd spot?
How well do they meet "base" consumer needs?
Quote:
So now your saying I'm jelous simply because I don't like electronics.
I think there is a difference between "like" and "understand".
My dad (a Farmer who left school at 14 to work the land) can't stand computers - but it doesn't mean that they aren't good (they have brought a LOT to people), it just means that he isn't willing to take the time to understand them.

IMHO older is better
Thats fair enough - I might humbly suggest visiting the older sections of this site

I formed the oppinion that instead of buy a newer truck a person is better off to find a good used Pre-96 Ford and fix it.
And you know what they say about opinions and.... well, you know

I'm not sure what it is about the "2009 F-series" forum, but everytime I come on here it gets me even more ticked off at Ford. The other boards here do not have this effect. Go figure...
So ignore it!!!

Everything. Way too many things to list
Ok, lets start
Quote:
The steel has been recylced many times and is weaker then it used to be
Ok, where did you get this one?
You at all familiar with the process of recycling steel, and the quality control process's, needless to say that the frame on the 04+ F150 is approx triple the strength of one 30years old, and about 5 times more rigid.
Quote:
Emissions keep getting tighter and thus the need for computers which crash without warning
Crash without warning???
1. Its rare.
2. Its repairable.
3. You could be tuning that carb 3 times a week, and still be getting 9mpg. Me, I will have EFI.
Quote:
I'll roll the window down... Oh wait they have the key. Oh then the motors go out and you can't get the window down at all. (My brother had that happen)
So, your issue is part quality, not the concept itself right?
Replace the motor! (And just think to yourself how glad you are that you don't have to replace all those rubber window seals!)
Quote:
Then there's the HYD clutches that get stiff in the cold and there jumpy if you don't get the revs just right.
You are the first person that I have EVER heard complain about a hydraulic clutch.
I have never seen either issues, but the first one indicates that there is a part issue (and its not like they were absent with cable operated clutches ) the second, an operator one.
I will be damned if I will spend another day lifting my body weight off the seat, just to get the clutch in, like you do with a cable operated unit.

I don't even listen to the radio in a truck. Even when it did work. My attitude is if you keep your eyes on the road and eres on the truck you won't have any problems.
How many miles do you do in a truck?

aluminum transfer cases suffer from CHAIN drive..
You do know how strong silent chains are right???

what about in 20 years when them 100 wires that go to all them sensors start corroding, or get knicked.. wow talk about computer errors.. good luck finding that problem
Simple, have a code reader.

10, 20, 30 years and you could go out in the field with a can of gas and a battery and most the time fire it up..
And how often did you have to do it too?

also the new engines are designed to run so much hotter to meet emissions that its very hard on engines.
Not on a well designed engine it ain't...
How many engines back in the 70's (300 I6 apart) did you hear that would go 400,000 hauling day in, day out without anything but servicing, like you get with the current modular motors?
At present about 15K/ year, half of which is done at speeds of 30MPH or less due to equipment. Hauling 4-5 ton at anything faster would be too hard to control. Not to mention the majority of gears have too loose of tolerances in the tie rods and bearings to allow it to be safe even with brakes.
