It's an EXCELLENT preventative measure for these trucks since casting sand seems to be one of the culprits for oil cooler/EGR cooler failure. Dieselsite.com has an excellent kit for about $120 (last time I looked anyway).
It is a FANTASTIC idea. If you get one, just wait until you see all the gunk it filters out! I built mine with parts from Napa, but unless you are kinda handy with fabricating a bracket for the filter holder, dieselsite.com is the way to go.
I bought mine from Dfuser.com. It was $160 but it came with 3 filters and two ball fittings which make for a fairly dry filter change. Relatively easy install, just a lot of coolant loss when you cut that first hose.
I lost only a teaspoon of coolant b/c i used a buddy. He held the lines at an upwards angle while i cut and hardly any coolant was lost. Definately get the fittings!
The coolant filter is an excellent idea. Don't buy your kit from Dfuser. He advertises the Baldwin non SCA charged filters but ships Fleetguard SCA charged filters. A 4 unit SCA filter is too much for the size of the Powerstroke cooling system.
The Baldwin CFB5000 filter head can be had on ebay for about $35, the B5134 filters can be found likewise for about $9/ea and the fittings and hose can be found at just about any auto parts store for less than $20. Add another $15 for ball valves from Home Depot if you so choose and you still have spent less than $100. You will need to fabricate a mounting bracket for the filter head, but that's not a big deal either.
If you want to purchase a "kit" go with Dieselsite because they have the best price and will send you the correct filters.
if i'm pushing 120k miles without egr cooler failure or oil cooler failure do you think that this filter would really benefit me enough to justify the cost of it?

I did mine after the EGR and Oil coolers failed... I had no choice. The spend was easy...
I installed the filter from Dieselsite, included the 2 shut-off valves. Was VERY simple. Did not loose ANY coolant, because I drained out about 2 gallons first. After the install, simply add it back in. IMO, very good insurance for adding life to the engine, EGR, and water pump.

My dealership (head of service department) is very picky so I asked them if they would make an issue of the coolant filter. At first, he figured I didn't know what I was talking about since he hadn't heard of one. After I showed it to him, he said it would be no problem. It would have to be a very unreasonable dealership that made an issue of this.
Many folks, including myself, have removed a lot of grit with it. The oil cooler, I have heard, can still plug up even if you run one of these filters so it is not a "cure all pill". It is a GREAT add on for reducing wear and tear that results from circulating this grit and casting sand. The first couple of filter changes had the most in it, but the casting sand can slough off slowly after many miles. Just routinely check to make sure the filter still has flow by making sure it is hot after you have driven awhile.
