Hi, I have a '98 4.2 automatic with 73,000 miles. The truck runs fine except that sometimes when accelerating, the transmission pauses between upshifts, allowing the engine to race. I believe this occurs on the 2-3 shift, and I am quick to back off the throttle before the tranny catches hold. This occurence averages about once per day, at various times and hasn't gotten any worse in the last two months. But it is annoying and I fear I may damage something if I don't fix it. The trans fluid level appears normal in level, color and smell. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Andy

 

Ask your friends and neighbors for the name of a reputable tranny shop and have it checked.

 

Have it checked now!!!! I have a 97 F-150 and my tranny was doing the same thing. Next thing I knew...I heard nothing but metal grinding. The belt in the trans broke and shattered first and second gear and cracked the housing. I had an extended warranty so it only cost me $50 but they did almost $1700 woth of work. Good luck!!
