1979 Ford F 600 4 x 4

Hello Everyone.. my first post
I would love to find out more about my truck
1979 Ford F 600 factory 4 x 4 (probably via ship thru)
360, 5 speed, bone stock FMC firetruck in excellent to near mint condition

Anyone know about where I can find emmisions info on it (I have to go thru California smog) I found a factory service manual (spendy) on Ebay and ordered it but I am wondering if anyone has a source for emissions control diagrams for this online somewhere..

Are there any companies/resources out there that have NOS parts for these trucks...

Many Thanks

Welcome. I like your username!

Anyway back to your questions.
See if you can find a Marmon Harrington (sp) tag anywhere. They were a big supplier of 4x4 HD trucks for Ford. That looks like a rock front axle so youve got some beefy components for sure.

Ask Mil1ion for a copy of the emissions diagram. Hes got all that stuff on a CD. There are probably others who have it too but I cant think of anyone off the top of my head. (see Dennis, Im trying not to single you out )

<----See all those blue company names? Those are sponsors of this site and they sell just about anything you could need for a 73-79. The big truck parts might be a little harder stuff to find but most things are the same as a F150.

Sweet truck by the way. What are your plans for it?

Welcome to FTE

You might consider posting all the info from your F600's Rating Plate, found either on the left door face near the latch, or possibly inside the glove box door. I can decode all the info.

Once decoded...all the codes will answer many of your questions.

Depending on where you're located, in the LA area are several places that specialize in big truck parts. While parts such as weatherstrips, and some of the trim is the same as F100/350's, and can be bought from FTE sponsors, the frame, some sheetmetal, and the entire powertrain is totally different.

No F500 or larger trucks used 360 engines. 1964/78: 330/361/391 / 1979: it's prolly a 370.

Smog test: Call the CA DMV's 800 number (best day is on Wed. or Thurs) to find out what type of smog test is required for this size of a truck.

Helm has printed all Ford's service and parts literature for over 50 years. They still list on their website = new original owners and shop manuals, wiring diagrams, other info: helminc.com

NOS parts: FTE sponsor Green Sales, joblotauto.com in Queens, NY specializes in older BIG Ford trucks.

The original 1973/79 Ford Heavy Truck Parts Catalog is available on a CD: hipoparts.com, also sold on ebay. The price is roughly 25 bucks = a WORTHWILE investment! (Make sure you order the HEAVY truck catalog, the Light truck catalog is worthless for F600 and larger trucks).

361s ended in 78, a 79 would have a 370. there were two 370s in california, one with EGR and Smog pump, one exempt with EGR only. you will likely need to see a smog shop or the state referee. good luck. my F-600 title was mis-labled as a diesel, so I kept my mouth shut.

nice truck, Mine is a crewcab, but not 4x4. very nice find

if you have dual tanks, you will have two charcoal canisters on the firewall on the RH side, the smog pump and EGR are similar to a F-350 with a 460 (same engine family) usually they will have a holley 4 barrel with a governor. you will get better mileage and performance with an Edelbrock 1406 but do it after the smog check, I removed all the smog on mine, using a stock 1968 Lincoln 460 intake, two 1 inch 4-hole spacers, and a 1411 edelbrock. I went from 6 mpg to 11, and it tops out around 75 vs 55

Thanks for all the replies everyone

Its a single tank

I get the truck Tuesday.. its on a flatbed right now coming from a small fire protection district in the midwest... It was always housed inside, not driven in the winter and was the backup engine since new. I spoke with the chief and he swears its a 360.. which I think would make it a y code motor.. Its never been out of the truck or messed with

I agree its probably a M& H conversion.. but it was done as a ship through since the engine company ordered it via spec directly from ford... it has two plates on it.. one from ford and one from FMC (The apparatus builder).. Ill see what they say

The VIN is F66MVEG1569.. if anyone knows how to decipher FORD vins Id love to know what it says. From the pics it looks like it has a smog pump but since its coming from a 49 state area perhaps.. if the vin doesnt say... I could do some mods and get rid of it and go egr only... but Ill have to see what the shops around here will require of it.Obviously I dont want to show it to them if I can change it to another form of legal smog (EGR vs Smog Pump) for the truck.. its never been in any smog computer anywhere because it was an exempt plated vehicle. Thanks for the suggestion to contact BAR directly and see what they would require.. that will be the bottom line.

.Im registering it as a Cali historical vehicle because commercial reg is a killer for it... Ill have to be going to lots of "Events" I guess.

I looked at several and this is the nicest 4 x 4 ford I have ever seen,,it has 21k original miles..it was a steal at 4500.00. It just got too old for federal funds because the pump (650 GPM) wouldnt certify at that age ,in years, per their regs... so out it went.. it was still in service two weeks ago as a backup pumper..
Ive only seen one 4 x crew and it was a wornout oil field truck

The FMC fire body is near mint and the truck has a winco generator on board that powers all the floods. The chief was nice enough to send it fully outfitted so its coming with everything right down to hand tools and radios.. he said they got a new engine and it was easier to just leave this one the way it was than strip it

I really bought the truck for the cab and chassis.. Im a fabricator and have been looking for a super clean old truck to build a custom aluminum bed on... My fire buddies are so pissed that Im even thinking of taking the pumper off that several of them have started bidding on it to save it for posterity...

I drive a black and white.. so fire engines, while fun, dont necessarily make my blood boil.. but it is a nice piece and I may have to leave it unmolested.... although I could build a really nice bed,, as nice as FMC does or better... to show off my aluminum skills as art..

I also have several diesels sitting around.. a detroit and a 7.3.. I thought either of them would be killer conversion motors.. its really up in the air right now

here's a pic of the motor area.. Ill get better ones as time goes by

Thanks Again

Welcome to FTE and this forum

I have practically everything you need.

Code M = 361 2v

Your engine may have an older calibration code for emissions

Let's start here with my 1979 Truck decoder

How happy I am its 361 industrial compared to a 360 plain old dog...

Now.. does anyone know what emissions a 49 state truck with a 361 "could" have... Im wondering if I can go to an egr only manifold and still show it was a factory piece..

I hate smog ***** too.. just like the rest of you.. and if I can clean the motor up by getting rid of a smog pump and a bunch of hoses and going egr only through a manifold change Id do it in a second.. anyone have any thoughts or good info as to whether the 361 came egr only.. exempt?

I thought the pump is a hale... 650 gpm.. could be a typo on the fmc sheet and be a heil

Ive got a boat load of pics...

You wont have to kill me.. my fire buds have already exceeded my purchase price.. but I wont sell.. theyre talking about me falling off a building already

is a 361 in the 385 family? The engine looks just like the 370 Lima in my 85 F700

theres some close up shots etc... but these are the profile photos

Its classified as a "pumper/wildland attack truck".. it has a 600 gallon tank.. good for one minute of full on pumping out of (2) 1 1/2 inch lines simultaneously.. which are the hose reels on top of the truck... they have power fed rubber lines.. then there is another 1 1/2 inch coiled hose.. a couple of hundered feet.. and (2) 6 inch suction lines and muliiple dumps..

hey.. Im not a fireman.. what do I know.. its big and red and pumps water.. it must be a fire engine. Ill start reading up on the 361...
