The cab is similar in most repsects.. some of the frame bracketry appears different
I am going to shorten the frame to an 84" cab to axle.. which will fit a 10 foot service body or flatbed.. Im not sure which yet.. theres a bunch to do before I worry about a bed. I could have shortened it to a wheelbase for a lt duty pickup bed but thats not what I want... I need boxes..lots of them.. this is still going to be a fire truck

Remove the cab, weld up a buch of holes, media blast it and prime.. put it away for later
shorten the frame.. sounds easy.. its a big job because of the double frame
sandblast, paint, coat...
pull the axles/springs... sandblast and paint,,,new seals... lockers.. hopefully I can get the late model F550 disc brakes to adapt... each rotor is rated for 13k so its definately within specs for the truck even fully loaded
The 370 is also for sale.. fully complete drop in, right down to the spark plugs.. same 21 k original miles
New fuel pump, new plugs,coil, filters, valve cover gaskets,air cleaner blasted and painted

are you sure its 1:1? it was my understanding that the 285V54 is the 1:1 trans, and the 72 was an O/D version.
I think the lower box under the model number should be D6HT (1976-up heavy truck)
my 79 has a 285V54 D7TA 7004 AA box in it, and the bus has a 285V54 D3TA 7004 EA

This is a vehicle to showcase my fabrication skills, show off some product lines I represent (eagle lights etc), stay in touch with my public safety background (L.A. Sheriff Sergeant (retired), US Coast Guard.. still working boats)... protect my ranch as a fire truck

Ive built street rods street trucks 4 x 4s to the one ton vintage, including one exploration truck.. but nothing this big....
The fire pump will be a 24 hp hale wildland pump with a 250 gallon poly tank... I also have a Lincoln ranger 10 and a custom made gen set that is going to run a plethera of lights the truck will eventually see..and a zillion interesting tibits I have accumulated over time
I currently run a coast guard disaster comm truck... I have lots of emergency vehicle preparation experience.. and while this truck is going to be mine its going to get the benefit of all my experiences
As to the tranny.. the numbers I posted are taken right off the case.. Ill defer to the experts here as to what it is,,it didnt feel like any overdrive...
Got the cab off today... now onto the frame rails and 200 rivets.. they should be fun to get off... not

About 5 dozen rivets fell prey to the air chisel.. enough to wear out two bits and make my arms sore from vibration...
Next step.. cut off about 50 or so welds that hold the double frame together.. the outer frame will be replaced...

Any f 600 gurus have a line on where I might obtain new cab mount rubber?.. mine is very good but I would mind having new stuff... its different than the light duty which are round puck style... the medium duty uses c clamp style.. and pucks

The front one took 30 minutes because I went very carefully,, the rear about 20 minutes.. easy as pie...
I ordered a set of selectro hubs (got them from Summit and they price matched the lowest price I found in the US).. they just came and are a thing of beauty.. no more spinning front driveshaft

American economy style.. note taper and thickness of face where wheel abuts
Its thicker than the drum brake face... requiring longer studs
Chinese version import.. note straight barrel casting.. this is good
thickness of face is close to stock drum thickness.. this means stock wheel studs will work
The chinese version wins hands down... funny thing is that it was probably 10 pounds heavier than the American version.. the American casting was finished nicer.. but not by much. The Chinese versions will work with minimal machining of my hubs,, the American version would require alot more work.. neither of the rotors has enough meat to machine them instead,, and then that would also make a custom rotor that would be a PITA to replace
The gears are so heavy that I have to wait for a friend to come over to help me put them back together.. it just needs four hands ..no way around it
I know these pictures aren't hugely exciting.. but its all in the building process and this is the kind of stuff that takes time and patience
Im doing a one off conversion to 4wdb... even different than what the rock crawlers do on the military Rockwells when they disc brake them.. none of that stuff fits my axles or knuckles... but the good news is that there doesn't seem to be any unsurmountable roadblocks. Im going to look at B700 calipers and f 550 calipers next.. the F550s are rated at 13.5 k each.. so they have plenty of oomph... and would match up nicely to a f550 master cylinder and hydroboost
Ive never seen b700 calipers.. so that will take some investigation.. and I imagine the braking system is drum disc with hydrovac.. but again Ill have to look into that
The rotor diameter is 15.2 inches.... the inside clearance of my Stazworks 20 x 12 super single wheel is 17 5/8.. so my caliper height can be about 2 1/2 inches.. I think thats doable (Tires are military michlen xl,, 46 inches tall)... this is going to be one big machine
Im almost done with the domex steel double frame.. probably 20 fitups and at least 80 holes needed to be drilled.. all transfer punched to pickup existing holes in the frame.. maybe another week of part time work... I was able to drill 90 percent of them off the truck on my big drill press.. but some of the top and bottom rail holes will have to be done by hand.. ugh.. a lot of arm strength as domex is TOUGH stuff...
I havent touched the cummins and allison yet.. Ive been too busy...
A buddy also suggested his detroit 6v53 motor which is sitting on a test stand right now.. it might be too much for the truck.. its hotrodded and about 450 hp.. but its free and in excellent shape.. many firetrucks used detroits... its shorter than the cummins but a monster at about 1600 pounds.. of course I do have a medium duty rig.. and I do LOVE the way detroits sound.. they are so distinctive

This is the correct kit the heavy truck parts catalog shows for 1973/79 F600's, for the rear cab mounts.
I believe you said someone told you the cab mounts (absorbers) were not available, but that's not correct...at least for the rear.
Check it out yourself, you have the same parts catalog I (now) do = TEXT: Body Section 100 / Page 10 / Body Bolt location #2 Cab Rear. Then type the part number into ftepartsguy's website.
The heavy truck parts catalog (I now have 1973 thru 2002), doesn't say if this kit does one side or both sides.
I could find no part number for the front cab absorbers for 1973/79 F600's that still showed available from Ford, but the type used 1980 and later on F600's is still available from Ford.
Check with ftepartsguy, the part number for the F600 front absorbers for 1973/79's may have been replaced by the 1980 and later type. I have no refs to tell me this, one way or the other.

As we both know custom making stuff takes forever.. Ive been on the frame doubler for a month part time and Im just seeing daylight. I calculated that the 80 or so holes I had to drill have taken hours to do (domex is drillable but it is tough and eats titanium coated drill bits like candy.. slow and plenty of cutting fluid is the only way to go)

I forgot to add... the front locker was easy to find,, the rear,, the rear was only NOS available... I found a Detroit distributor that had two left,, that was all there were in the US.. I paid dearly for it,, but oh to have that locker
Well.. a couple of months have gone by and Im still amassing parts.. the 20 " custom wheels and 46 inch military xmls from John at Stazworks have held me up.. but Im in the last month of waiting for them..
The lockers are done and went in without a hitch
The dual frame is done,, unpainted
I have been super busy and havent had the time to devote more than an hour here or there.. perhaps after the fires slow down and I get the thing to rolling chassis and out of the 100 degree sun and back into the shop things will speed up

The build is proceeding after a summer off.. because of forest fires
The 46" XMLs are being delivered monday afternoon...Stazworks dropped the ball taking 5 months for what should have taken 30 days and I had to get on their butt..hopefully there wont be any disappointments.I dropped 3500.00 on 5 custom wheels and military tires... which is almost what the truck cost originally.. I located some NOS parts such as axle wiper seals etc.. which I would have had to make ... Arvin Merritor.. the people that bought Rockwell .. still have some stuff around.. finding the orginal parts crossover sheet was an act of God.. it took me a month but I have it and from it I found some little things I wanted to make the axles like new...
The frame doubler is all done.. Im working on some sub assemblies.. stubborn spring hangers etc... slow progress... until I get it back to a rolling chassis it seems like all hard work
