If you're going to put a bed, why not take 2 8 foot beds from an F100/F350 and combine them in one very long bed.. then put some aluminum plate under them to match the plating mounted vertically under the doors!
interesting thought.. would be really neat looking..like some of the newer 650s are doing..
I was thinking of building an aluminum diamond plate service body.. then the truck would be fully usable as a field truck for my ranch.. and I could make it a service truck if I wanted every easily
In reading about the 361 I see there were a number of AIR and non AIR intake versions... hmmm.. getting interesting.. I need a ford guru who understands the thermo system and whether I can get rid of it without a head swap.. and make it look factory.. and 49 state available
Yah, there's a guy with a mint tow truck like your firetruck near me for sale.. It seems to have a shorter frame. If I had more time (and could afford gas to drive it) I'd love to do that to it.
my F-600 gets about the same mileage that my F-250/350s do. I have a 12 ft flatbed now, but will create a 12 pickup box someday. 56-77 step side fenders match the 73-79 front F-5/800 fenders nicely. I built a F-600 pickup in high school back in the 80s it looked pretty good. a rancher uses it to pull horse trailers.
There's a smog pump somewhere under that hood = that silvery looking device spliced in amongst the hoses in the center lower of the pic is the "Thermactor Air By-Pass Valve."

I looked at the engine pick. Thats not a FT engine. The T stat housing is bolted to the block straight up .There is no air rails on the exhaust ports , instead it splits at the rear and goes to each head.I would count the valve cover bolts when you see it just to settle what engine it has. The smog is also really easy for these trucks it just costs a lot of cash. You will have to have it smogged at a commercial truck center. the nearest one to me is lodi and runs about 400.00.

It is an FT engine.
The uppert/stat housing is straight up (C8TZ-8592-B). It bolts to a lower t/stat housing (D4TZ-8592-E) that bolts to the intake manifold.
Originally, the 330 M/D's used the same t/stat housing as an FE (C4TZ-8592-B), but the 330 H/D's and the 361/391's are different.
Beginning in 1974, all the engines used the same setup.
Thermactor system changed in 1977.
Dennis = illustration of the t/stat housing and related parts in your 1973/79 Light Truck Parts Catalog (same pic in the heavy catalog).
Section 80 / Page 7.
Memo to NOM: Dennis has the parts catalogs on a CD, while I'm using the Ford parts catalogs on Microfiche, so I can't scan and post illustrations.
