Buying Headers, remove AIR injection or no? 87 RV
Summit has headers with y-pipe for 419 and the ones with AIR tube adapters for 449. Each primary has its own tube which really takes up a lot of engine bay room.
I'd really like the extra working room however I am a little worried about operation. Will it run ok without AIR?
Also, As soon as I register plates for the RV, Illinois emmisions is going to want me to come in. The engine will be completely warmed up which is past the AIR injection stage anyway correct?
I think the RV will have a hard time passing emissions anyway as the previous owner had to get an exemption.
My current manifolds have several broken bolts and as you can imagine, leak pretty badly.

This topic has been discussed in great detai in a previous thread, however in short no you dont need to run air injection tubes to your headers. However if you look back and read on, you will see that you do need to run air to your cat in order to make it work properly. Good luck with the install.

I don't know about Illinois emission laws, but some states do a visual check where all original emission equipment must be installed and operational. Check the laws before you decide to rip the air injection off. You might be better off spending a little extra $$ and getting the headers with the AIR fittings on each primary tube. If you decide to take the AIR injection off later, the header ports can be easily plugged.

I just put on a set of Thorley tri-y headers on my 86 class B rv. They were under $350 wih the air injection fittings. I was originally going to drop the air pump but a state inspector droped by the shop that was installing them and threatened them with a 100 fine.
Any way if your are willing to spend the money you might as well ones that will retain the smog fittings.

I did read that post about the AIR pump and its use.. very good reading actually, it answered a lot of my questions.
I will be removing the AIR pump equipment on the manifolds. This is my low budget project and I need to save $$$ every place I can.
I'm pretty sure there won't be a visual at the emissions place. If there is, I'll just rig it up so it looks like they are connected. lol
Thanks again.
