If you talking about the touted 6.2L motor. ( rumour is 425 hp/425 tq unless someone can confirm otherwise ) Dodge already has the 6.1L hemi that equals the hp # and ups the tq#.

The "improved" 5.4L will be the competition for the 5.7L Hemi. Those #'s ( 380 hp and +400 tq ) will hopefully be matched by the "improved" 5.4L. Be interesting to see how Ford will pull more power out of the 5.4L. ( ie, tuning, heads, exhaust )

Yea that would be sweet if they made that 5.4 have more ponies, But what about gas milage on the "Improved 5.4"? Are they going to go with MSD, and twin Plugs per cylinder?

I would hope Ford would step up and have something like the MDS on their truck motors. I haven't heard of anything.

Seeing in 2020 everyone must be at a fleet average of 35 mpg.

I wont say the dodge is bad looking, to me it looks ok, not good not bad. Seems like they do have a few cool features though. I hope ford steps up their game a little!

IMO, the 5.4 needs the 4 valve heads, and to get the HP, it will have to rev faster, think 99 cobra R mustang.

It already revs fast enough. High revs is the last thing you want is when your pulling a load. Ford just needs to flatten out the torque curve, like dodge did with the HEMI

Holy crap! That trucks looks amazing! HUGEEE increase over the older trucks
Holy crap! 9 mpg!

Probably outrun the Tundra, at least until it ran out of gas. Tundra is no economy champ, but the Dodge now is lower than the Toyota. I can only imagine what the higher horsepower engine will do with a gallon of that ethanol crap.

MDS was added to the RAMs in 06, and suposedly the new engine is supposed to have even better economy. I think you could epect around 17-19 MPG easy highway with the new RAMs.

EDIT: Just found this:
http://www.allpar.com/model/ram/2009-ram.html

Basically it says the new HEMI has variable valve timing (on a pushrod engine?), higher compression, higher flowing heads, intake and exhaust ,and a veriable intake manifold, better oil pump and the MDS has been updated so it spends more time in 4cyl mode. 4 MPG better then the previous gen, and 0-60 in 7 seconds. Whether any of this is true remains to be seen, but reguardless, 2009 will be a very interesting year.

All of us have to keep in mind that MDS works well in an empty truck at cruise. Any acceleration that you want to have and it goes V-8 and 9 mpg. If I owned that thing it would be in V-8 mode and looking for more cylinders to turn on! LOL! J/Kg! Really, that's an EPA test mode thing on rollers I believe. Not real world. Guys that I work with have Rams (3 anyway). One is a 2002 with the 4.7 that sucks it up at about 12 mpg while my old Ford does about 19 mpg on the highway. We traveled together, so there wasn't any fudging about his or my gas mileage. Two others have the MDS engines and love them, but they don't do as well as the 4.7L. Surprise!

Anycase, it's a very attractive package. I just think folks need to keep their feet on the ground and their eyes wide open. It takes horse power to push these barndoors through the wind, and that means gasoline. And we all know that ethanol in all it's glory has a lower calorie count than pure gas. So you get to buy even more...improved MDS not withstanding.

I have a co-worker with an 06 Durango with the MDS Hemi and my bro-in-law has an 07 Ram and both get 22-23 ish on the highway @ 70 mph. ( first hand experience with the Ram )

Keep in mind our terrian is prairie, flat but still the odd 6-8% grades.

I couldn't agree more. I like the fact that Dodge and GM have the options RIGHT NOW in their trucks. I hope Ford can have this same sort of technology on their new motors upcoming because once/or gasoline hits 5 bucks a gallon. Selling horsepower will be a thing in the past. ( hopefully we won't go back to the 70's!!! )

Ive heard that MDS is worthless. Ive never drove a dodge in my life let alone in the highway for a long period of time. But i have many friends who are VERY! Upset with there dodge trucks. One guy had so many things go wrong the first day he had it they considered it a lemon, Went out and bought a new 150 and loves it. Also my old boss said that his MDS got stuck into 4 cylinder mode and wouldnt go back to 8. Only kool thing is the Two spark plugs per cylinder.

MDS is not worthless, if it was, chrysler wouldn't bother putting on the trucks or any vehicle, and their huge trucks and SUVs wouldn't get 18+ MPG on the highway.

Anyways, A friend of my dads bought a brand new F-150 a year or two ago, he had so many problems with it, that he made the dealership buy it back.
