Has anyone removed and repainted their roof rack?

Good post because I have recently been wondering the same thing. My 2000 expy has a roof rack that is peeling also and it looks horrible, so I was planning on removing it this spring sanding and priming and painting it but was also wondering what was underneath it. Also planning on taking the plastic grill insert out also and painting it too because it is all faded too. Has anyone ever taken the grill out? is it seperate from the rest of the front end and any ideas what kind of paint to pain it with? thanks.

I took mine off a few months ago. Painted them with paint spray (semi flat black enamel ) did not prime nor sand (was too lazy), just cleaned them well and used some paint thinner to get grease off. They still look good. I put some black silicone on the threads of the screws and also a bead of the same stuff around the holes. It's been raining here a lot lately and no leaks.

Yeah I also removed and painted mines. Very easy to do and looks alot better. Everything can be reused when reinstalling and you shouldnt have any problems with it. I agree with Chrisja you might like the look of your Expy better with the racks removed. I just put mines back on after about 3 weeks of leaving them off.

If you deciede on replacing your grill with an aftermarket one. RockAuto carries them for $32.79.
