87 BroncoII Trans Swap?

Hello I have a 87 BroncoII eb with a 2.9L engine. (engine blown Good trans w/OD)

I would like to know if this trans will work in a 1985 BroncoII with a 2.8L engine (bad trans, great engine)

are these parts interchangable?
Thanks Mark

Automatic or manual transmission?

If automatic, the '87 will have an A4LD, and it should only have one solenoid in the valve body (I'd double check to make sure, it seems like '88 was the first year for the 2 solenoid valve body in the A4LD).

'85 was the first year for the A4LD. Make sure your '85 doesn't for some reason have a C3 or other 3 speed transmission. If they are both A4LD's with one solenoid, they will be direct replacements.

If manual:

A TK5 should swap for a TK5 and an FM145 should swap for an FM145. I'm not sure which is more likely in the '87, but I expect the '85 would be the TK5.

In either case, the best first step would be to positively identify which transmission is in each. There's a good chance they both have the same transmission and will swap just fine.

Auto Trans, The 87 has a 3+OD, and the 85 has a 3 speed auto, no OD.
I was hoping the 3+OD would just bolt onto the 2.8L

The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same, but I'm not sure about transmission length. You may have to move the crossmember and adjust the length(s) of the driveshaft(s).

Assuming your '87 is the expected one solenoid valve body, 4th gear is vacuum controlled, but you won't have the lockup torque converter clutch unless you figure out the wiring for it.
