Overdrive Transmissions
I keep reading in this forum that a transmission from a 351M/400 will fit behind a 460.Has anyone in here ever put an automatic overdrive behind a 460 and what kind of luck did you have with it?I would like to put a setup like this into an all steel 49 F-1,and I would love to get at least a little gas milage from it.help me out here guys!...
49 F-1 (soon to be 460 powered streetrod)
50 F-1
83 F-150
94 Explorer
95 Mustang
If you listen on a quiet night..you can hear a Chevy rust...F-1s FOREVER

My friend has a 1990 van with 460 fuel injected, with electronic overdrive (switch in the dash). I would like an automatic overdrive. myself... Cheaper to repair/rebuild!

how big is the E40D compared to the C6? I have been considering a swap like this but using an AOD from ART CARR if the tranny and bellhousing are cheap enough. The C6 and AOD have the mounting holes in slightly different locations, one off by less than 1/2" and the whole length is very close also.

The E4OD is pretty close to the same size as the C6. Also there is a company by the name GEAR VENDOR that make an attachment that bolts onto and replaces the tail shaft section of the C6 transmission that give you overdrive. I have heard nothing but good things from this unit.

the gear vendor is truely a cool product but i dont see where 2000+ dollars is worth it. for that much i would rather just suck it up and live a more rpm on the road, or go get me an e40d and computer to control it. although if i did have the money i would put it in, am i being hypocritical? i think so. ah i dunno anymore, damn college is starting to hurt my mind.

A late model low-mileage E4OD with all the good Ford upgrades (the earlier ones are prone to problems) will run you close to $1200. Add $400 or so to get a Baumann Engineering controller for none computer controlled trucks and another $200-400 to shorten the driveline and misc. parts...and you still will end up shelling-out $2000. An AOD beefed up to handle a big-block, with all the adapters and such will run you some serious money; probably way more than either the E4OD or the Gear Vendors unit. An alternative to overdrive is to turn the C6 into a wide ratio trans by using a lower ratio planetary gear (TCI or GER, 2.74:1....stock is 2.45:1) and going to a taller ring and pinion to keep the same overall ratio in first gear. Not quite as effective as an overdrive, but lots cheaper.

checked the price on a gear vendors overdrive, for the regular vesion its $ 2,395.00 and if you tack on another $ 550.00 looks like they will install it for you.
check it out at
http://www.gearvendors.com/prices.html
once again if i had the money i would do this but i dont and wont for a long time.
