370 and 385 V8s ???

I have a 460 in my motorhome (love to hear that baby howl when I floor it:7). I knew it came from the 429, but then wondered if there was a smaller displacement engine of the same block. The title of this forum says there was a 370 and a 385, but scanning the first page of threads, it appears there is not much discussion on them. What vehicles were these engines installed in? Anybody know? Just curious.

TallPaul, you ought to hear Harrison howl!!......downright SCARY!!.....the other day I was passing a Porsche and looked down at the speedo and was doing 90 mph UPHILL and the pedal was NOWHERE near the floor....the exhaust pipes I swear could be heard in the next county. I'm sure the poor guy in the Porcshe had to go home and change his undies...he MUST have thought some sort of low-flying nuclear missile was going by!!!....

Good luck with your engine search....I heard Harrison's biggest Option from the factory would have been a 360 engine. 473 inches is much better...

>Big trucks

Thanks. Either they reduced the displacement of the 429 for an extra heavy duty truck engine or the 370/385 were around before the 429. But I think the 429 was first.

Harrison must sound awesome! Looks great too. I met a guy had a '64 Galaxy with a performance 428 in it. He had no mufflers, just long pipes out behind the rear tires. That thing sounded beautiful!

370 and 385 V8s ???

The 370 was found in Ford's medium-duty trucks (F-650 and the like). It was generally set up to be a low horse, monster torque powerhouse.
The 385 is non-existent. Why the series is called 385, I don't know, but the 385 doesn't exist. Some hypothesize that it's a reference to the 460's stroke, 3.85 inches.

The 370 was also used in the Lincoln Continental and pre-dates the 429. It replaced the MEL engine.

Anyone know offhand what transmissions they used in the bigger trucks when coupled to the 370's or 429's? Manual or auto's.

370 and 385 V8s ???

Wow, you folks really know your stuff. MEL = Mercury/Edsel/Lincoln and began around '58. I was looking in my "Ford Trucks Since 1905" book yesterday and another Ford big trucks book and found the 370 but no 385. So maybe the 385 refers to the stroke. I wonder if all three (370, 429, 460) have the 3.85 stroke. The idea of the 370 predating the 429 is interesting though much of what I read implies the 429 was first, such as one book said the 429 was the first engine Ford designed around anti-smog parameters.

Thanks all.

The 370 was never used in a passenger car or light truck. 429 was used by Ford/Mercury beginning in 1968 and 460 by Lincoln, same year. Only difference between 429 and 460 is that the 460 has a longer stroke (3.85", 429 is 3.59") and used dished pistons.

370 and 385 V8s ???

I just bought an 81 F600 with a 370 2 barrel, last Friday, and really like the engine and the way it drives.

But I am having no luck on locating a service/shop manual.

Any suggestions?

How do you think they would fit or work in a pickup truck? Do any of the med duty trannys have overdrive?.

The spicer trannys are not overdrive just geared lower and very strong
it would be intresting to see if it would fit under a pickup but the cost of these tranny is pricey Eric

370 and 385 V8s ???

I found an old thread on that discusses the 370 engine:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/cgi-bin/dcforum/dcboard.cgi?az=show_thread&forum=DCForumID11&om=37 0
It says it was a low rpm torquer with a 4.050 bore and 3.59 stroke. But does anybody know what the torque and hp peaks and related rpm levels were?
