Off-Road fuel?

Will off-road fuel(15ppm)have any ill effect on these 6.4 motors and emissions(EGR,DPF,etc.....). Pros and Cons.

15ppm "off road" fuel is ULSD dyed red to show the road use taxes have not been paid. If it causes problems, tax exempt operators such as county, state and public school districts across the country would be in trouble.

Well keep in mind that if the DOT decides to put a dipstick in your tank (i live north of Monroe and have never heard of them doing it) and it comes out red - it is up to a $10,000 fine! And yes it does happen. Sometimes Traffic enforcement cops will sit close to a Off Road diesel pump waiting for guys like you to fill up (i know, dont they have anything better to do!?) Even if you only use one tank - and fill up 5 more times the dye may still be present and you could still receive a fine.

As for the low sulfur diesel (15 PPM) - These 6.4's are not rated to use LSD and are actually cautioned against it strongly. This may just be because of the EPA standards that ford is required to write that but i honestly have no idea. i would stick with the ULSD to be safe (5PPM)! Play it safe, those engines are DAMN expensive and you wouldn't want to ruin them and void your warranty at the same time.

I thought 500ppm is LSD and 15ppm was ULSD?

Opps! Yes you are right! Been crunching #'s all day !

LSD - 500PPM
ULSD - 15PPM

Oh ya - if you wanna check out different countries sulfur content go here. You think our standards are tough? Check out Sweden!!!!!

no way wil it hurt the engine,,but it may cause problems with the regenerater? who knows, but my vw jetta an 6.0 have been running for a long time on the red stuff. and my supplier told me that they have been buying ony the ulsd for some time now. probaby all the lsd has been washed out by now. they still get #2 or their home heating oil.im adding a 500 gl fuel tank onto my small new house just so i cn get the cheaper #2 for ll my tractors etc.

you guys have more luck / money than I do to risk running the red stuff. People have gotten some hellish fines for burning it. i just don't do it because of the fines and penalties involved.

LSF produces more soot when burned, which in turn increases particutes in exhaust to be traped by DPF, this will require frequent regen to keep the PDF clear, which is done by spraying fuel in during exhaust stroke to lite off and turn the soot to ash. Which will affect fuel mileage, since off road fuel is only required to meet 500 ppm sulfur level untill 2010 (ex CA) and its cheaper than ULSD (dosent have additional lube additives at higher cost in ULSD) how are you saving money by buying off road fuel??

Indian reservations may not have to pay road tax's (which would justify why its classified as both)- Just a thought not background knowledge to that one.
