exhaust Noise

I seem to have an exhaust noise in my 1988 F150 5.0. It is only there when the engine is not under load, when you give it the throttle it goes away. It appears to be coming from a valve at the rear of the engine. Has anyone experienced this before, it looks like it would be tuff to replace?

What kind of noise? Is it a ticking noise? If you have a busted exhaust manifold gasket or loose bolts it can cause a leak, thus ticking sound.

It is more of air/rattling noise. From inside the cab it sounds like an exhaust noise but it goes away with heavy acceleration

There is an emission tube back there, you need to see if it's just the valve thats bad or the whole tube. The tube goes from the back of one head to the back of the other and it's not that bad to get off, only 1 bolt on each side, I think it's either 7/16 or 1/2 inch wrench. The bad part is you probably have to lay down on top of the engine to reach back there.

Thanks, I looked last night and from I could see, you are exactly right. Because it comes and goes I assume it will be the valve but of course it did not do it last night. I will have to check it out this weekend when I have more light.
