I was introduced to #5 of 100 today. It just looks mean till you hear it run and then there's no doubt about it. I think Roush hit a homerun with this one! Does anyone know what kind of 1/4 mile times these trucks run?
Some people say that about the Lightning, when comparing them to a Mustang. Its all relative. They can get into the low 13s, high 12s with a pulley and good dyno tune.

Yeah I get that all the time. People telling me my truck weighs too much. I'm comparing it to the Lightning. If it weighed the same as the L it would be a better truck. Awsome truck now. Bad ass truck if it were lighter.
1. It won't last long making those kind of passes. The Roush has a 36K/3 year warranty on it.
2. The SD still handles like a bigger brick in the corners (Roush's suspension really gets these trucks handling very good).
3. The SD will still be just another truck in the crowd. A Saleen or Roush truck (SRT as well, but that's a whole different topic and they aren't all that fast)... turns heads and will be spotted a mile away.
4. A 7.3K SD with $10K of mods -- won't hold its value. I've been shopping for a 7.3L, and personally I won't touch any SD which I know has been tuned. Too many guys who never watch EGTs....
5. It will get killed by the Roush in real world driving. The Roush blower makes monstrous low end torque without having to spool a turbo up.
6. The Roush will still pass emissions including a sniffer test -- even with a good aftermarket tune.
7. Roush's tuning is very mild. They play it extra, extra safe with their tuning. Even their A/Fs tend to be on the rich side. A good custom tune will yield an additional 50-60 RWHP on it and do it safely.
I've yet to run into a SD that can take my truck from a stop and many have tried. I'm not saying there aren't any, but I haven't run into one around Atlanta yet. Considering what my truck will do (and its a 4 door Supercrew), I'd have to say Roush is being conservative with those numbers. Can't say that about some Lightnings though --- I'm a little more careful around them. I've tuned a lot of 7.3s and 6.0s, and driven my fair share. They can be made fun, and fast... but I'll take the Roush or Lightning over a built 7.3 any day for the fun-factor.
There are a lot of things I could do to my truck to make it faster. But the same can be said of a Yugo. At some point, if you're trying to be the fastest game in town you need to start off with the right platform. I'm not trying to be the fastest... I'm saving that for a project car I have in mind.

1. I'm not bashing the Roush. I agree that it is an awesome truck.
2. Like you said before about comparing vehicles, "it's all relative".
3. This would be entertaining in the 7.3 forum.
4. Thanks for your passionate response!
BTW, I love my truck. I've had it since new in 99 and wouldn't own anything else. If I were in the market for a gas burning performance truck, the Roush would be the one.
I am going to back up mitchrock1 The 7.3 is a great engine and no ofence but what you said here 5. It will get killed by the Roush in real world driving. The Roush blower makes monstrous low end torque without having to spool a turbo up
If you throw on a New intake, Exhaust, and Dp tuner on a 7.3 it would kill the Roush in real world driving. More room and more towing is what's make most people happy IMHO and a 7.3 CC fits that bill good

Do you know what a 7.3L with those bolts ons does in the 1/8 and 1/4? I assure you its not gonna beat it. The 7.3L is good for what it is, a hauler which can be made fairly fast with a few bolt-ons that will beat lots of cars and trucks, but with just a tuner, exhaust and intake its not going to take on any decent Mustang, or Lightning, Roush or Saleen F150. Maybe a 6.0L (if the heads don't lift as they are prone to at high boost) but not a 7.3L.
Anyone here in the Georgia area willing to lay some money on it?

I live the best of both worlds when it comes to Lightnings and the 7.3L PSD.
I will admit I'm a neophyte when it comes to the 7.3L, but from what I've read over these past few years of learning here at FTE University, it would take a little bit more than 10K dollars in mods to drop one of the big boy SuperDuty trucks (crew cab 4x4, Excursion etc) into the mid 13 second ET range.
The following list of mods was, at one time, my wish list for my wife's 4x4 Excursion that I felt would guarantee me a time slip deep into the 13 second range.
QSSB turbo - $2,700
ITP/Dynomite Injectors - $2,500 to $3,200 depending on which you choose.
ITP Returnless Fuel System - $550
Terminator Big Oil HPOS - $2,600
AFE Stage 2 intake system - $420
ITP H2E/AFE intake adapter - $180
MBRP Exhaust - $350 - $1,000 dollars depending on what you choose.
Head Studs - $750
DP Tuner F5 with two tunes - $325
Gauges from ITP - $500 to $600 dollars depending on which ones and how many you choose.
John Wood Built Transmission with billet convertor - $4,000 minimum.
These are just the bare minimum items. I didn't include the peripheral items that would be needed to go along with the above big ticket items.
Taking the above prices on the low end, the total is already passed $15,000 and none of that includes new forged rods which I don't need, but others (those trucks that are '01+ rigs) would, depending on their year of manufacture. Forged rods would add another $2,500 to the price and none of these prices include installation for those that can't do all the work themselves.
I disagree that the PSD won't last long with 10K in mods though. These are really stout engines and while they may not last over 500,000 miles with the above upgrades, I'd lay odds that it would last as long (if not longer) as a similarly built 5.4L engine.
Also, I'm not sure about other states, but diesels in California are exempt from emissions testing. So there is no sniffer test for them at all.

My old f350 cc with a 6.0 had injectors a fuel system, larger intercooler, exaust and some custom sct tunes put down 490hp 870tq at the tires, And ran 13.1 @101 in the 1/4. Not to bad for a truck that weighed 7800 lbs Total cost to me was around 4500 bucks.
