Hi, i have a 96 7.3 with a 5 spd, 285/75/16 tires and 4:10 gears and the tach reads around 2900 at 70 mph. Can this be right? I was wondering if maybe the tach was off? It seemed like the 94 460 with 4:10s and a 5pd I had only ran around 2400 or so.

Sounds like your tach is off. I have a 96 7.3 automatic with a 356 (?) rear end. At 70 she is turning around 1800 RPM.
285/75 R16, 4:10 GEARS, AUTO 2200 RPM. Havent checked the milage in a while about 16 the last time I checked. You can reset the speed-ometer to compensate for bigger tires, but I don't know how thats done.
I had my speedo checked and when I had 4.10 gears I was running 2500 rpm. Now with 3.55's I'm running 2100. That's at 60 mph though. 235-85's both times. Oh yeah. 5 speed
If I keep it at 70mph in the summer I have seen 19mpg on the highway. Doing 75-80 it drops to about 16. I have seen an all time best doing 55 on a long trip, about 21 mpg.
k460 it sounds as if you never went to school. To fix your problem lift up on right foot. It is pretty hard to do but with some persistance it can be done.
Joe I believe the auto's allow for lower rpm's than the 5 speed's. I wouldn't imagine that the tire size will drop it 500 rpm's. What doyou think?

What are you talking about? The tach changes what it reads and the speed stays the same while the rpms change.
You sound like you need to go back to school and work on reading comprehension?! That comment was not only ignorant but very out of line.
