motor rattling

My husbands 2001 Ranger with the 4.0 SOHC has a rattling sound in the motor. Sounds like it is coming from the valve cover on the passenger's side. It has 145,000 miles on it. Any ideas what this could be?Could it be the valves, maybe not getting oil to them ?

Thanks

The SOHC motors are prone to timing chain problems...sounds like that might be the cause of the sound. Here are a couple of threads with more info:

Ya, definitely sounds like the timing chain rattle. Mine has done it since I got the truck, but seems like its getting worse/louder. I'm at 75K and I've taken it into ford, but nobody at the dealer has ever been able to hear the noise... interesting.

OHC motors always have some valvetrain noise. It is just the nature of the beast. As they age it becomes more pronounced.

Has it had the 00m12 kit done, that includes a replacement tensioner and new intake seals, its worth doing as it should stop the chain from slapping around- the increased movement on the chain can cause them to break or jump and that would wreck the engine- get it done and be safe!

Is that the passenger side tensioner?
