460 cooling question

I have a 95 F250HD 4x4 with the 460. Today, I had to jump off a friends' truck and i revved the engine up to about 3000 rpm to charge his battery up. I stepped back around front and I saw antifreeze on the ground. I looked under the hood and saw some antifreeze under a hose in the area above the timing cover but the hose was dry. I drove it home and the temp was normal. I also have watched it and it hasn't leaked any more since. I was wondering if these engines occasionally "bleed" antifreeze. The engine had warmed up about 5 minutes before I jumped the other truck off. Any advice or experiences would be appreciated.

Was it around the radiator cap? They blow when pressure gets too high. Overflow in your coolant reservoir?

Don't know if this is the same problem as yours. Working from memory, so forgive me if I can't describe it exactly.

My 94 460 had a little bit of antifreezw puddling up on the top of the engine. There is a hose, about heater hose size that goes to the top I think into the thermostat housing, or there abouts. I tightened that hose and the puddle went away.

Good Luck,

If it no longer leaks, I'd just tighten that hose as insurance. Coolent hose heat will normally evaporate any traces off the hose itself. If the engine coolent isn't warm enough to open the thermostat, big pressure builds up in the engine and that hose between the pump and intake manifold. Revving the rpms up increases that pressure.

I had a similar problem with mine. It persisted for years even after replacing hoses, clamps, ect. It turned out to be a hairline crack in the thermostat housing. It is made of cheap pot metal. Ford does not carry that part anymore, got one at NAPA,cast iron, no more leaks.

Beetle is right. Have replaced two thermostat housings in ford trucks for the exact problem you are describing. One cracked on it's own and the other one cracked when replacing the thermostat. They are made of very weak metal. I would definitely check the housing first.
