carbon build up in head?

I am wondering what causes the heads to get carbon build up? I believe its causing my truck to ping. When I run some techron and 93 octane through the truck there is an occasional ping or two. The techron seems to clean it up, but It seems that after I run 89 octane for some time the pinging comes back. I only use name brand fuel. I would think that a hotter plug would burn more but the dealer said the tsb called for a colder plug. I am thinking that maybe i am not getting all the carbon out of the heads and with todays fuel it just builds up again. Any ideas? Maybe I need to run 93 for a month or so to get all the gunk

I would suspect that the ERG port in the intake is clogged causing it to ping. You can sometime see it by holding the throttlebody open and shining a light in there. Pretty common pinging problem on these engines. Carbon in the head isn't too common on these engines.

Thanks Lx man,
I was just wondering exactly where the egr port is. I can check it but am not exactly sure what I am looking for. I will remove the air box to get to the throttle body then where is it from there. Mabe its obvious, I am not sure.

Open the TB blade and look back and down I believe, it is about 1/2" diameter or so.
