Bell Housing Bolt Patterns

Someone help me! I can't remember what the story was with 351C/351M/400 bell housing bolt patterns. Some would only bolt to Cruise-O-Matics, some were the same as Windsors? Thanks.

The 351M/400 utilized in the trucks have the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 429/460 (385 series). I believe the 351C had the smaller bolt pattern.

There were some earlier 400 engines that were bolted to the FMX transmission as well, if I'm not mistaken.

351M/400 same bolt patern as 429/460 exception is 400 installed in full-size '73 Ford with the fmx automatic transmission(code PHB-AD). It has the same pattern as the 351C.

My 1977 Cougar has 351M, but it's original transmission was an FMX!?
After three FMX's, I swapped out to a C6. So, did the factory put a 1973 block in my '77? (I am far from the car to be able to read date codes...)

There were large pattern (351M/400/460) FMX bell housings, weren't there?

If not, you have a really rare bird... a small pattern 351M block, and a small housing C6.

I would guess you went from a large-housing FMX to a C6.

Come to think of it, I believe the FMX had a removable bell housing...
That's probably how it was done.
I read a 1980's article that rated transmissions of all types. The C6 had a great efficiency loss, but had the highest increase of efficiency when built with a shift kit. (not to mention they are tough
The last C6 started acting up within the first week... Took it back to the shop and they found that the steel vacuum line was pinched off somewhere. They installed a rubber hose from manifold T to the modulator and that fixed it.

That is true, the FMX/Cruise-O-Matic did had a separate bell housing.

wasn't Cruise O Matic the name given to all 3 speed Ford autos during the era? The C6 in my 71 Torino was called Cruise O Matic, according to the report I got from Ford Archives...
I have seen very few articles on building an FMX, but I have read a couple... I don't think they are as strong as the C6/C4's, so maybe that's why they are not so common.

Sorry, we always called the FMX's Cruise-O-Matics.

The MX/FMX came with at least three different bell housings---small block, FE big block and the 385 series big block bells. I have two small block bells and an FE bell. There was a small block bell patterned 400 block. These were snatched up long ago by the Pantera crowd.

Not all of them....

I've got a '73 small bell 400 in my '67 f100. Was gonna sell it and get a standard 400, but I decided to track down a small bell c6 instead.

Most early 80's E-series vans had 302's mated to small bell C6's. Should be pretty easy to find.

I thought finding one would be easy too, but alas, it's been a pain. Part of it is these D**N gas prices. Makes it too expensive to ship one from out of state or go pick up the ones I have found. They are all out in the middle of BFE and my 'bump' would cost too much in gas to go get it. I found ONE that someone doesn't want too much $$$ for, but it needed too much $ in repairs to make worth buying.
