secrets of the dread filter minder

the filter minder came into being way back in the 60s when airfilters were changed to paper versus oil bath. they were added to tell truckers when their filters needed changing. all big rigs have them. they are the exact same filter minder that you find on your ford psd air filter. they never "need reseting" unless you install a new filter element. they only indicate the amount of resistance to air flow from the natural plugging of the element with dirt etc. they have no control over the operatiion of the engine. they are like the oil dip stick. they just show you somthing. does your dipstick shut the engine down if the oil is down 4 quarts? no more than the poor little innocent filter minder should be causeing such ansked. mbe ford should use a few pages in the owners manual explaining that it is just an information inicater, nothing more or less than that.

Aww man what are you missing? We pay 50k for a truck and want everything to work as it should. I know in the old days you could do this and that but its 08 brother and we pay GOOD money for this equipment.

the filter minder does not change just because you run the engine without the element. nore will it change if you unscrew it from the filter housing. depress the rubber end of it, and it will return to read zero. it holds the highest position of vacumn that it records. why does such a simple little gizzmo have such a hard time being understood? i repeat myself,,it is nothing but an indicater of vacume created by the risistance to air flow though the filter element. the more plugged the filter gets, the higher the vacume created between the filter and the engine,,when the little meter shows it is to the red,,it means its time to fork over big bucks to fomoco for the most over-priced filter element i have ever seen.

Ok but its telling us that its not getting enough airflow when its pulling into the yellow than is it? Enough said... Ford has to come out with a redisigned airbox for these 6.4's in the near future.

it must be very defective. dont worry about it. it doesent affect the way you engine runs. the filter des,but not the filterminder. if it worrys you, remove t and plug the hole or silicone it or sumthing. it has no more relevence as to how the engine runs than the ash-tray.

then buy an nafter market filter system. i had a fram regular rectangular flat filter installed on my 05 psd. it hardley moved the filter minder in 35,000 milesqnd the whole thing cost a few bucks more that fomoco gets for their element alone! and onl took 30 seconds to install a new element.

OK I get the picture. Now can you tell me with certainty that the wires conected to the filter minder are not connected to the PCM in a manner that makes the truck run with less fuel when the minder shows yellow or red than when it shows green. If so then you must understand the complete tuning of these 6.4's. I don't know what Ford put into the control system of these trucks. I hope that someone does then they can tell me what does happen. I have read posts from people who feel that when reset the filter minder the truck runs better. Maybe they are smoking crack but I doubt it as they can afford a $70,000 truck.

The filter minder has 2 wires on it , When the 75% level is reached a signal is sent to the GEM module it does not go to the PCM. The GEM module then displays on the dash the filter needs to be serviced.
