Custom engine computer????

Just a general inquiry here. Hope someone has done this or knows how / what is needed.
I have a 1963 F100 project that now has a Ford 5.0HO (1994 Tbird) coupled to a GM 700R4. I have the original engine computer that came with the Tbird. Don't wish to use it as it requires chip changes, etc. I am looking for a more flexible solution that will control the engine and, if possible, the transmission.

Does anyone know of a engine computer solution which is easily programmable and can handle the trans?

thanks.

The original computer should work fine unless the engine has had a cam change and the 700r4 can be equiped with a vacuum operated tcc lock up.

Antony25,
thanks for the reply. I agree, the original computer will work. It just will not do what I want it to do, enable changes w/o a chip change (ie PC or programmer support) and I would like to be able to control the shift points, etc for the 700r4.

any one else?

Don't know anything about electronics, but some people suggest MegaSquirt. Good luck with your search, Dave

Currently megasquirt only controls the engine but the megasquirt megashift should be out soon. Is your trans a 700r4 or a 4l60e? The 700 is all mechanical except for the torque converter lock up. The 4l60e is computer controlled.

For direct transmission control (4L60E), the GPIO board will be available in about 2 months. Lance on the MegaSquirt site is road-testing the transmission control code right now.

The GPIO board interfaces to a MegaSquirt MS2 version (or MicroSquirt) using CAN network - this communicates engine RPM, throttle position, etc to the transmission controller, and during shifts the tranny controller can send a brief ignition retard command to the MegaSquirt.
