I'm a firm believer in, "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is", and that has proven correct more than once.
I drive an older diesel truck. I averaged around 15.75 - 16.25 mpg combined city/highway when not towing. I checked my Fuel Pressure Regulator (FPR) pressure reading. It was low, so I shimmed it with a BB and cleaned the screen. That brought the pressure into the "normal" range of approximately 70 psi. I also started using a product called Diesel Kleen. I ran two tanks (about 35 gallons) and began tracking mileage again.
I took the average of four tanks (about 70 gallons) and was amazed. I was consistently averaged 17.25 mpg.
The Diesel Kleen helps clean out the fuel lines and injectors. Bringing the FPR back into spec helped alot. Throttle response was quicker and smoother. I didn't need to "get on it" as much when entering the freeway.
What this tells me, IMHO, is that properly maintaining your vehicle's systems and driving responsibly is the best way to go. Gas or Diesel, if your vehicle is not maintained on a regular basis, no "gadget" is going to cure the problem.
