Thinking of Buying a Bronco

I was thinking of buying a 66-69 Bronco as a toy and to tow the boat. Any suggestions and what the best year is?

How big of a boat are you planning on towing? With a short wheelbase and light weight, they don't make the best or safest tow vehicles. If you are wanting a Bronco tow vehicle, maybe look at the 78-79's.

As for the best year? It depends. Early models will have minimal emissions, but will have few options. Later models are smog laden, but you can have an auto and power steering as an option (73 and newer) and factory power disc brakes (76 on). The best advantage of the Bronco is that all of these options can be added to the earlier years pretty easily if you want to do the work. There is also a lot of aftermarket support for EFI engines, overdrive manual and automatic trans. Complete, new power steering and brake systems. And almost any other upgrade you can think of.

Also, Early Broncos came with a Dana 30 front axle until 1972 when they switched to the Dana 44. Its stronger and I believe the disc conversion parts for the D44 are more readily available.

Another minor thing (which can be annoying) is that they had vaccuum wipers up until 1969.

Look here for full comparison of the different model years...

Good Luck!

Just out of curiosity, has anyone done a mod motor swap into one of these? are there k members/tranny mounts available for such a swap? There's a 68 available for sale locally, that I've been eyeballing, though after owning 4.6s, 5.0s and 5.4s, i'm definitely more of a mod motor fan.

is the engine bay wide enough to fit one of these motors?

Yes, several folks have done mod motor installs on EBs. The first (that I know of) was done by Van Tumblin and was on display at the Carlisle All Ford Nats in 2006. It had a 4V 4.6 in it and didn't require as much modifications as you'd think. I believe a body lift was necessary but not inner fender or frame hacking (so I hear).

Quite a few threads about this on classicbroncos.com (his screenname is Modman over there). I understand he is developing a mod motor install kit for the EB (wiring harness, headers, motor mounts, etc). I would love to do this mod someday to my halfcab.

From Carlisle 2006 at the Bronco 40th celebration.....

Gives a whole new meaning to the word "stuffed".

Go with a Windsor. Direct bolt in, better fit, simple electronics (for EFI) and more power and torque potential, in my experience.

I was thinking of doing one of these in my bronco someday as well. That would be great if someone came out with a kit for it.

no kidding; and at the speed 2v mod motors are dropping in price, this could be quite an easy way to breathe new life into one of those things. Definitely gonna keep an eye on it.
