460 in a 71...what headers? hooker, headman, and where?

Hey Guys,

I know this has been asked before and it will again, I'm sure, but I used the search engine and could not find it. I've got a 71 w/ a stock 1974 460 in it. It is time to get that smog motor going. I've got the edelbrock intake, a 750 carb, and now I'm putting on early heads and some headers. I need to know what headers will fit in the 71. Also, where is the best price, PAW, Summit, where?

Thanks
Austin

460 in a 71...what headers? hooker, headman, and where?

No one knows. Surely someone has a 460 in a 67-72 F100 that also has headers. I don't want L&L, they are too expensive. I know; you get what you pay for so I'm ready but what are my other choices? I found one other post that a guy got some flowteks for the 73-78 and then had to trim a cross member and I don't want to do that.

Help,
Austin

Check online catalogs for all the header manufacturers. Most, other than L&L, produce headers for trucks by what engine was available from the factory in a model year. I don't recall the '71 being available with a 429 or 460.

Yeah, I can find them everywhere for a 73 on up but not before. The only ones I can find for the 67-72 is L&L and dark horse performance. The dark horse one seems to be a shorty and I was looking for full length. I was hoping that someone knew of a headman or hooker header that would fit.

Thanks
Austin

I have a 67 f-100 with a 460. As long as you use the motor mount setup from a 73-79 truck there is not a problem with using the headers for a 73-79 application. The front half of the frame is the same for the 2wd from 67-79. The headers that I bought were Dynomax/Thrush . That was 6-7 years ago. The ceramic coating is dull now , but it definately keeps the engine compartment temp. down . These headers are 2-1/4" slip for the pipes with 1-7/8 primaries. A 3" collector will cause clearance problems. The starter barely clears and it is close on the pass. side frame rail. Clearance on the ps box is reasonable.I had to add a ps cooler on mine because the heat in summer traffic would cause a lack of assist. (probably from fluid overheat). As far as the flanges, they are true and don't leak. The l&l headers are nice. I have been to their plant. They have a gas rig that cuts the flanges and does a beautiful job. Their flanges and tubing are thicker than what anyone else uses. They then get a coating, but I don't remember what type. You get what you pay for.

Thanks 71cc. I bought my 71 w/ a 460 already in it, so I don't know what kind of mounts I have but I think I will try and find maybe some used headers for a 73-79 cheap and see if they will fit. If it is close then I can make them fit.

Thanks

When you go to put a 460 in a 67-72 truck i ask you what is the operated range of your truck. (RPM 1500-6000)?
hooker super comp are good for lower rpm useage but if you are going to go from 3000rpms to 7000 then use headman husler headers.
Its all about power, go for a 3000 stall and the moter to match.
