Should intake be sealed with silicone\sealer or not?

I just got a "regular" Felpro intake reseal set, two end seals, two side gaskets. I tacked the side gaskets in just too hold them, not really for sealant measures. The end seals, I coated on the underside, and once in place, I put it at the joint where it was specified. The old gasket had remnants of blue silicone on it I believe. You think it will leak on the sides? I torqued it up, but would rather hassel with it now, than later after carb is back on, and the coolant is refilled. I now have a engine lift at my disposal, wish I had it the first time. Thanks, Blair

If it's not leaking, then slap her back together and let her rip. It is not a necessity, just insurance.

I rarely use any sealer on the intake gaskets. The end gaskets, cometimes i use them with RTV in the corners, sometimes just RTV all the way across the ends.

Just a thought ofr furure considerations.....I have coated the intakes with anti-seize compound and have reused the 2-3 times on an old cleveland.

Thanks for all your input fellas. Haven't even run her yet, looks like my carb is trash even after rebuild, I used the black at the ends, didn't put any around the coolant ports though, guess I'll have to fire her up and just see how she does. Thanks, Blair

With my stock motor I had no problems using the rubber end seals. When I rebuilt it, I had the heads/block shaved, and used an aluminum manifold. When I used rubber seals after I had to pull one of the heads off (don't ask) they split and were squished out. I assembled the motor using silicone only, and did not have any problems. I sealed it again with silicone, after the problem and I will never use the end seals again. Just make sure you use enough to cover top and bottom, or you will have an oil leak.

Should intake be sealed with silicone\sealer or not?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 11-Oct-02 AT 06:15 PM (EST)]Thanks Tony, still haven't run her yet. Taking forever, intake has been done for two weeks, having to fabricate a fuel line over to the new carb. Blair

Tony,

I had to do the same to my 460, the guy that built it used the end rubber seals and the front on all but popped out... so I finally pulled the manifold and installed new sides and silcone sealed the ends. No more oil leaks!

I like silicone myself.....all the rubber ones ive used leaked. If you notice, when you buy an edelbrock intake they suggest using silicone and not the rubber
