Nice stuff...

Those MN12 (t-bird/cougar/mark viii) rear IFS setups are pretty stout. There is an article somewhere out on the web about how to stiffen it up. Found it: http://www.mn12performance.com/mn12how-to/irs/irs.html

The Mark VIII has an aluminum differential case (pumpkin), apparently stronger than the cast-iron version. What's nice about the setup is the rear cover of the diff - it acts as a brace.

Way back when when I was hot into my '96 t-bird, I had heard that 450HP+ was possible through a T-bird SC or V8 rear without much work if any. The only killer was wheel hop - which turned out to be the pumpkin bouncing around.

anyway...

The local salvage yard had a few of these in stock and I bought them both for a good price, I resold 1 and have the second for sale in my ebay store. The owner of the salvage yard says in the past five years I am the only one who has purchased this type rear end, he said they are a really well made rear end and rarely go bad.

I had heard there was some differance from the T-Bird and Cougar rear ends but did not know til youpointed thm out, thanks.

I will be sure to check out the link. Thanks for the info.

What's more bullet-proof than a Ford 8.8" with a brace on the pumpkin?

I believe the only difference between the IRS in the Mark VIII and the t-bird/cougar is the aluminum diff housing.

I put together a 3.73 with Auburn LS for my '96 t-bird. My sister has it now (she's 62) and is used to it. I have the right to remove it and put the 3.27 back whenever I want, but it's happy where it is for now...

All SC (Supercharged 3.8) and all V8 MN12's got the 8.8" diff. The NA V6 got the 7.5

I think there was a difference in the axle shafts, I'm pretty sure that the later V8's all got the SC shafts... or there never was a difference to begin with.

You have a good rear end for some serious torque ... PLEASE post pics when you get it setup, and during installation ...

Yeah, the differential are incredibly strong! More over, if something get's over torqued it's going to be the the axle shaft joints that fail. Trust me, replaced a couple of them so far. Mostly because of age, wish they were servicable, but as with any CV joint, they are sealed. The limited slip is incredible on the Lincoln, you can feel it change over when cornering. Right side is pulling then in a hard turn, just as you think it will break free, the driver's side grabs and pushes the car through the turn. Who the hell can love a front wheel drive??? You'll never get the touch and feel of true racing in a drifter/slider front wheel puller....

Just my 2 cents worth!! Yes, call me an "old Fart" from the "old school", but how many pros race front wheel????

Man oh man is that ever a nice stang!

Ive been looking for a mark viii for a transplant, year right, good luck. About the only 4.6 liters i can find is I found one 96 mustang, but its got a manual, then i found a few lincoln town cars, which might not have the stock hp to make it worthwhile.

Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada, a little ways away! Do you know of any wrecked, or to be wrecked ones that a guy could buy the engine and tranny, possiblye rear end out of? I know I would have to consider shipping a factor too...

Cool thanks for the link man, Ill check it out. As for my f250 I mostly drive it on the highway about 500 km/s to work and back, so it doesnt really kill me too bad at the pumps, the price of diesel is crazy though, dare to compare yours to ours? lol

Right now its CHEAP in edmonton where I am, at 95 cents a liter at the flying j.

that puts you at 3.59 per gallon, about where we are. Lowest I found yesterday was 3.33 or 89c per liter....Mine is about to go out of warranty (mileage), so I'm fixing to convert to veggie oil. I'm running an old toyota diesel on recycled veggie now. Runs better than it did before I converted. I am keeping the original tank for diesel but adding aux tank with Veggie. Crank it and kill it on diesel, run it on veggie.

Thats cool, how hard is it to do the whole veggie oil? Ive thought about trying it, but just didnt really have the time for it.

I did it the easy way. I still run diesel at start up and shut down to get all the veggie out of the lines. I added an AUX tank in the bed of the truck with an electronic valve to switch between tanks. Added a 12v thermostatically controlled heating element to the AUX tank so when the veggie drops below 85 it heats it...sometimes I dial up the temp and it runs better. ON hot summer days, runs like a race car!!!
