Timing Cover Removel

Timing Cover Removel

Im replacing my timing chain cover(after i broke it) and I have everything off and the cover is moving but it wont get past what i believe is the oil seal...The oil seal wont come off because there is a sort of pin that the harmonic balancer slips over. So if anyone could tell me how to remove the cover from the crank it would be appriciated...Thanks

Specs:
1974 ford 460 engine

if you removed the dampner there is a sleeve on the crank behind it that you need to remove too.

By pin I assume you mean the key that the balancer slips over??

You need to remove that in order to remove the spacer, once you remove the spacer you should be able to pull the timing cover right off

Yea how do you remove the pin to pull off the sleeve?

They can really be tough to get out if they've been in there a long time you can try tapping a screw driver in a the end of the key and then that will wedge under it and pop it out

AKA woodruff key, as even stated use a screw driver or personally I use a cold chisel and lightly tap it out rocking it up from teh front.

Be sure it is un-bolted from the oil pan as well

I had one engine where a screwdriver worked. Another more rusted one needed a chisel, which meant the key was ruined... had to use another one.
