i assume it is manaul steering ??
yes to an extent it can be run down
it is the lock nut with the slot head on top of the box in the engine compartment on the box itself
........but
your best bet is to spend the cash for the rebuilt box or rebuild it your self.
take it from me you will be very happy.i have a 68 manual steer.

Before you even attempt to adjust the steering box, you want to make sure there is no play in the steering linkage, shaft or front end bushings. And you want to make sure that your steering box is centered, especially since you have a small lift on it. If you need to know how to do this, let me know.

If you adjust the steering box improperly, you will ruin it.

Put the wheels straight ahead. Remove the drag link at the pitman arm. Count the turns from lock to lock and divide in half. Turn the wheel from lock back to that many turns. This should be the center of the steering box. You may find that the drag link will not connect to the pitman arm at this point. Depending on what steering correction (if any) has been installed, you may need to make some changes/ adjustments to reattach the linkage. You may need an adjustable drag link or drop pitman arm.

Once you determine that your steering box is at center, you can adjust the steering box play. It is mostly by feel and experience. Loosen the lock nut. Have someone work the steering back and forth across center and tighten the adjuster. I feel for a little drag across center and then I back off just a little bit (1/8-1/4 turn). The Chiltons shop manual gives the factory procedure. My shop manuals are packed away at the moment while I'm moving into my new shop.
