Question SeaFoam?

I have a 97 Ranger, 3.0, 122000mi, 4x4, 5spd. It is my second vehicle and is not driven all the time. I bought it about a year and a half ago and i noticed the lack of power since then. I know it is a 3.0 but it should not feel like this. I was thinking of using some sea foam. I have yet to use this in any cars i have owned but i was told it works well. I guess my question is what is everyone's opinion on it. Also, how would you reccomend using it? I know you can do it through the gas tank or in the oil. How much gas sould i have in the tank when i do it, or are there other ways to get it into the oil. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Go ahead and use it. The can will tell you the ideal mixture rate. I know guys that dump a whole can in an almost full motorcycle tank. I think the ratio is a general rule of thumb and nothing you have to stick to hard and fast. The stuff does work. It may clear out your injectors a little and get you some more power. Our '93 Ranger has had a few cans run through it. It's cheap and simple. If it doesn't work no big deal. Good luck.

i ran the stuff in my 89 today.i took the vacuum hose off for the brakes and ran it through there.then let it set for 10min and fired it up and drove it like it wasn't mine.i also checked the plugs before i did it.and changed them after i did it.and they looked the same.have heard to change the plugs after using it.but i don't think you need to.just my 2 cents

haha it might pissed them off but when i did mine i did it when like everyone was at work or just a odd time of the day or even night. it's just has alot of white smoke come out the exhaust. I would say do it in the street or a big empty parking lot if u don't want to make people mad.

one more quick question though. With having high milieage, 122000, will i have to worry about it ruining the rings or seals in the engine. I only plan on doing through the vacuum line and gas tank right now. I just dont want to make it worse than it is now.

Running it through the gas tank is less risky & less chance of loading the oil up with crud & Seafoam.
Nothern Tool had it for $5 & change last month.
If that doesn't get results, try a dose of Chevrons "Techron Concentrate Plus", in a tank of Chevron, Texaco, or CalTex gas & run most of the treated tank out, with some highway & high rpm spirited accellerations thrown in.

Let us know how it goes.

If you decide to do it through a vacuum line, take care to do so slowly, so as not to suck so much in that it stalls & hydrolocks the engine & bends something up!!!!

I'd suggest using a metal "sports" needle (the kind used to inflate foot & basket *****), attached to a piece of tubing, then dip the needle into the Seafoam.

That way your less likely to get too much too quickly.

If you ingest it through a open vacuum line, I'd consider changing the oil & filter afterward & maybe pulling a coupe of the spark plugs & check them for fouling.

Running the Seafoam or Techron through the gas tank takes a little longer to get results, but imo it's safer to do it this way, as you don't have to worry about making a mistake & hydrolocking the engine & it removes deposits slowly, more like they were built up, so it's less likely to foul up the oil & plugs.

As has been said, ingesting it directly through a vacuum line will likely smoke up the neighborhood fo a bit!!!! lol

well i went and seafoamed my truck this morning. It didn't smoke too much but there was more black smoke than i would have wanted. My friends...dodge....has a ton of smoke at first, so all in all it wasn't too bad. I did do it though the vacuum line but used a "sports" needle like pawpaw suggested, worked great by the way, Thanks! I do have a little smoother idle and it stopped the knocking on my friends truck. I put it in that gas tank so i will see how that goes. Just wanted to update everyone in case you were thinking of doing it. Thanks for all the help!!

Good feedback & to hear the vacuum line dosing seems to have gone well.

Now with the treated tank of Seafoam in place, be sure to run mot of the treated tank out & do some spirited accelerations & a couple of 10-20 mile higway drives, to help blow out the loosensed up carbon & she'll feel "all fresh & clean inside". lol

Then I'd consider changing the oil & filter, as feeding the Seafoam fast, through a vacuum line, will let some of it & any crud it removes, get into the oil.
