460 E.F.I. need more power!!

hey guys, i have a 93 efi 460 in a 250 truck, 4.10 gears and 5 speed manual transmisson. this truck is used to tow a 8000lb skid loader so i cant make a drag motor out of it, but i constantly want more power. i get around 12mpg and would like to stay around there as much as i can but i need more power, what do you suggest?? i am looking to just add bolt on parts. chip maybe?? i hear you can only run premium gas, while that would be nice to do all the time, i usully run 89 octane. with gears as low as 4.10 shouldn't this thing really accelerate? not racecar stuff i realize but i thought it would accelerate better than it does thanks for any help

also, i forgot to add; this engine hardly ever see's 3k rpm's is this normal?? i usually drive it around 1500-2200 rpms. 2200 is when i shift and around 2300 on the freeway. this sounds really low because everyone talks about 2-5k rpm cams,i realize thats usually on carbed engines but still. this truck has 1 cat and a dyno max muffler and 3 inch exhaust

I can say that headers will help you out. Possibly a hi-po throttle body and definately a chip. Performance parts are not readily available for EFI 460's due to the fact that there was not much demand for them then, but now there is more available than before. I have only seen 2 sets of headers for our motors, one is from Hooker, the other is from Thorley. The Thorleys are near-bout twice as much as the Hooker's. Hope this helps you out.

If your only looking at bolt-on power adders...definetly go with headers, dual exhaust and a K&N replacement air filter BEFORE you order a chip. Ken can have one custom made for your truck on this site. Also, if you think you'll ever want to add an aftermarket cam you need to do that BEFORE you purchase the chip too. You can run a MILD cam with the EFI engine...I had one custom ground but I think a RV cam from Comp Cams or something similar would work just as well. For towing heavy loads keep your intake duration under 210 degrees measured at .050"
My cam runs 206 degrees intake/ 211 degrees exhaust and is ground 4 degrees advanced to pick up the bottom end. Good luck, Deen

L&L makes fantastic 4->1 headers for the late 460s. Banks also makes headers, theirs are stainless steel and cost more. Don't mess with any so-called 'shorty' headers for the 460. Get some good tri-Ys or 4 tube ones. Follow them with a good 3" low restriction single exhaust system or a pair of 2-1/4" pipes if you like duals. If you live in an emissions testing area, get a 3" low-restriction performance catalytic.
Most noticeable single seat of the pants improvement you can make on your 460. Don't put cheap headers on your 460! They'll warp and be a constant pain in the a@@ forever.

Banks makes a complete bolt-on power pack system for the late 460s, it's a little pricey but no complaints from people that own one.

Here's a good article that documents the benefits of bolt-on mods to your later 460.

Always shop around for best prices on all parts.
