Reccomendations for a cam and intake?

I finally got my 460 runnin right, and, I think it's time to do some upgradin... I've already got a 1411 on there, and, now, I'm thinkin about a cam, maybe an intake, and headers. I'm not buildin a high RPM screamer here, the truck is my daily driver, I do lotsa low rpm 'wheelin, and, general low rpm grunt work with it, and, most likley, yanking a big 'ol trailer is gonna happen, even though I don't own one yet. I alss plan on goin to at least 35's, and, maybe re-gearing, although, I'm looking at putting in a secondary tranny, high gears and direct top is better for fuel mileage than low gears and O/D.
Just browsin Crane's site and came across their new Truck Power line... Looks interesting, but, I've never ran anything smaller than a 270H(in a 300 I-6 no less...) http://www.cranecams.com/truck/353904.htm
AFAIK, the engine is pretty much stock, it was re-built about 9000 miles ago, but, I don't know what all was done(that was 3 owners, and 4 years ago,) but, it's happy with 87 octane fuel, and, has a nice smooth idle, so, I'm figuring it was a stock re-build.
As for the intake, the stocker probably is the best for my application, but, if anyone has anything different to say, let me know.
As for headers, I'll likley go with Hedman units... I had good luck with 'em on my 300.

What do you mean 'secondary tranny'?

I'd look into the compcams' 265DEH, X4262H, X4256H, or an rv cam. I'm sure crane has similar grinds. The 270H is whats known as a 'square cam' (meaning the exh and int durations are the same) and is not generally recommended for the 460 engine.

Stock is fine for what you are doing.

Evan
You should seriously think about regearing the rear first. 3.55 gears and 265 tires put you close to 3.25 ratio. Not much ump for serious pulling. And you want 35.00 tires... I would go with 4.11 gears, Comp 268h cam, 750 Holly or Edelbrock. Hedmans are good.

Comp 268h cam is a square cam. The 460 can use a bit more on the exhaust. Consider the 265DEH if you want a 260 something. Avoid the 'H' unless you do exhaust valve work and porting.

Reccomendations for a cam and intake?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jan-03 AT 00:01 AM (EST)]Well, after a bit of digging, and fooling with Dyno2K, that Crane Truck Power cam looks pretty decent for my setup, it's a 260/272 with .487/.518 lift on a 112* lobe center.
Well, I'm probably gonna have to re-gera because it won't be too likley that I'll find a D60 with 3.55's for the front, but, I'm still working on the secondary trany deal... I could use it's O/D then... I have a 4 speed "brownie" aux. tranny from a big truck, 2 underdrives, direct, and O/D. I'm working on adapting it to work in a married application instead of going to a divorce mounted NP 205 and having to find another tranny/convert mine.
And, on the effective ratio thing, a 235/85R16 works out to be 31.7283" tall, while a 265/75R16 is 31.6496, so, the effective ratio is more like 3.56:1...

for good power go with the hedmans and a good quality exhaust. i added an edelbrock intake and holley carb and i love it. the best thing though, that made me really notice a difference was the msd ignition. if you do all of these like i did, you will have a good strong running engine. then if you top it off with a good cam you will have a real beast of an engine. just talk to the people before you buy and tell them what you will have done to the engine and what you will be using it for. good luck.

Reccomendations for a cam and intake?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Jan-03 AT 11:22 AM (EST)]This is a good combo that I found that works well. WEIAND Stealth Intake Manifold and the Extreme 4X4 CompCam X4262H-11 262/270 duration with 514/524 valve lift using a 1.73 ratio rocker, 111 lobe separation, 1400-5600 RPM range. Good mild streetable set-up.

Everybody seems to like the 260/270 range cam.

Reccomendations for a cam and intake?

hi
i really like the Lunati Bracket Master II cam with the sloted rocker arms and bigger valves. huge low end power, good response. dont over carb i have a little #1407 and a good intake. i suggest an edelbrock performer rpm manifold. I have hooker headers on mine, and a little bit higher compresson than stock. I really like the combo.
