the tint on my truck is turning purple from the arizona sun, and id like to have somethin darker to keep it cool when summer rolls around. if I do it myself, is it alright to lay new tint over the existing stuff? Or should i have it professionally done?
Strip it off. If you know an installer they might be able to get you darker tint than you can buy in parts stores.
I like having pros do my tint work, I have done my own and it is pretty fun to do.
I just feel that they know the ins and outs of tint application - something I do not know. I think the purple haze will still be "seen" if left on the truck.
Tint usually turns purple if you use window cleaner on it. I like to clean my tint with water only.

Purple tint means it's cheap quality. Ammonia type cleaners will damage tint, but most "glass cleaners" don't have ammonia anymore. I would have the tint done at a shop, that what they do and they know how to do it. Don't know about how dark you can tint your front windows (most states have legal limits), but most shops won't go darker than they are supposed to, unless you pay cash and they do it "on the side"....

I don't know about them getting darker tint then stores sell. I have 5% I bought in a parts store and I saw 2.5% in store. I can't see at night with 5%. 2.5% you might as well just paint the windows black!

You can get REALLY dark tint at most hardware stores (residential use), or you can just double up the tint. Not that this is safe or legal......oh, and there is spray on tint (paint).......
Remove the old first, clean and scrape the window well to get the old glue off, brake clean works well for this. I always use 30% which matches pretty well with the factory privacy glass. You can buy computer lazer pre-cut tint on ebay, and I think it comes with a kit for installing.
The question I ask is "would I do my own Mortguage paperwork?"
The point is that you oay a professional to do what a professional does.

Holiday Inn Express aside, I always tell my customers that if you want to do it yourself, then you give up the right to blame others for the installer's shortcomings. Big difference in quality window tint and hardware store DIY tint. And most installers have several grades to choose from so let your wallet be your guide. I've always like the premium stuff. Lasts longer and generally looks better.

Ok, just trying to help out a DIY'er, did'nt mean to ruffle any feathers. I would not recommend doing your own mortgage paperwork, cant just pull it off and start again!!

Well the purple is from the cheap adhesive on the tint. When it starts to break down it turns purple. And yes ammonia based produts do not help either. I would peel off the old tint, spray the glue residue with soapy water(you can mix it with ammonia if it is really hard to come off) and scrape it off with a razor blade.
Some tint shops will sell you good tint for 2.50-3.50 a foot. It will cost 30-60 dollars for you to do it yourself or 100-140 for a professional to do it(Single or ext cab truck, Crews are more).

Yeah if you don't ever want to have to do it again I would invest in some high qualiity tint, not the cheap stuff you find at Wal Mart ect..You could, depending on the vehicle find yourself spending as much as $250 to get it professionally installed, thats how much I typically have found it to cost. The type of tint you want is the kind that is "metalized", so it will reflect the suns harsh UV's rays oppose to the kind that absorbs it over time. Nothing worse than purple tint lol, but it will look great, and actually make your windows have a really cool shine.
