new broken 2002 2 day old truck
Hi all. I just bought a new 2002 F-150 XLT supercab 4x4. Living in the northland (northern minnesota) there is a northland edition truck. Which basically includes the crome nerf bars and the power moon roof and stickers on the fenders. Got the 5.4L and Fx4 package too. I like the fact that they put Rancho shocks on stock. Anyways, I've had it for 2 days and it broke already. Went to drive away this afternoon and she started fine, but the ABS light stays lit, and if you turn the lights on or put it in any gear it'll die. Idles just fine though. I have no idea what it may be aside from some electrical problem maybe. Poor thing only has 140 miles on it and I haven't even been able to put gas in it yet. And to think, I was planning on ordering up the banks power pack for it as soon as I got home. I guess I'll wait a while for that now. It didn't make it to the dealer until after hours so I have to wait till tomorrow to see if they got around to looking at it. Anyone have a vague idea what it could be? I'll keep you posted in case anyone else might run into this problem.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-Mar-02 AT 05:24 PM (EST)]I got the truck back this afternoon. Actually not a big problem to fix. Turned out to be that the PCM and ABS module was somehow grounding through the headlight and brake switch. They had to sand the paint off of underneath where ever they were grounded. I don't see how that could ground through the lights like it did since it sounds like it wasn't making the ground connection at all. All I know is that it runs great now and am happy with the fact that they had it pulled in the shop and ready to work on it before I even called (which was only a half hour after they opened.) They said that they've seen the same problem once or twice before on the 2001's. Maybe I'll make that power pack purchase after all.

Keep in mind, over 80% of dealer mechanic work is based on warrenty. This is all types, the next time you are in a shop notice how many older vechiles are in there VS newer ones. The main difference is that you don't pay to fix the warrentied ones. However, your problem was a workmen ship error from the factory. The star (sharp pointed washer that a screw forses into the metal) washer penetrated the paint to create enough ground to pass inspection at the factory and the dealer, but when you drove it for a few weeks the ground became corroded/dirty. Now that they have installed the ground to bare metal you will be just fine.
