best f-150 ever? i think not! maybe if they put the 300 i6 with a manuel option.
I agree with you there I had a 1989 F-150 4x4 with a 5 speed and that truck had plenty of power and tork...Great Mileage per gallon also.. Did stink on the hills pulling a trailer and it did hold it's own though..
I do miss those old trucks..

My 05's look good still, thank god! But, I've got a 550 at work that is silver as silver can be with NO black at all now.
Maybe they finally got it figured out!
Would love to at least see the diesel under the hood in 09! I agree about being nice to sneak up on someone by not having it shown under the emblem.

Yep. Not happening though. Remember ford replaced the 4.9 with a 4.2 The same motor that belongs in a compact truck, not a full size. And they wonder why I don't like new trucks.
I have always wondered why on the earth Ford got rid of such a good engine as the 300 six cylinder. Those engines will go forever with no trouble at all. My uncle has a 95 f150 with the 300 and it will pull an equivalent camper on any hill with our 2000 5.4.
You're kidding, an underpowered inline six which couldn't haul heavy loads at highway speeds? Great if you like base model trucks - I prefer a V8!
I swapped out my 300 inline six for the 351 in my 1/2 ton. I live the 351, but it definetly isn't the bullitproof workhorse I had before. I agree with the earlier post. The 300 inline six and the 460 were the last true truck engines made by ford (gasoline, of course). Ford doesn't have a truck engine that runs on gas anymore. (the v-10 is a fine speimen, but too much of a pain to work on)
That is a great question and depending on the application that what ever that truck is being used for would answer that the best...
Weather if it is used for work or play.

Then by-George, the 5.4 in my '05 SuperCrew is an awesome truck engine. Pulls my travel trailer extremely well, and gets 18+ MPG empty on my commute to work. It does everything I ask it to do well.

Okay, let's first assume play...
Horsepower
4.9 - 145 HP
4.2 - 202 HP
302 - 205 HP
4.6 - 248 HP
351w - 210 HP
5.4 - 300 HP
460 - 250 HP
V10 - 362 HP
The new engines, in every category, have more horsepower.
Then let's assume work:
Torque
300 - 265 ft/lbs
4.2 - 260 ft/lbs
302 - 275 ft/lbs
4.6 - 294 ft/lbs
351w - 325 ft/lb
5.4 - 365 ft/lbs
460 - 410 ft/lbs
V10 - 457 ft/lbs
All but the 4.2L have more torque than their counterparts with only a 5 ft/lb difference between the 300 and the 4.2L. Coupled with its much higher HP, the 4.2L overall is going to be more capable than the 300.
I love old FE engines, and how easy they are to work on. But, if an FE were found under the hood of a modern truck it would have just as many computer and electronic interfaces. You cannot use simplicity as a yardstick, unless you want to say the 1948 F1 was the only "real" Ford truck made. They are all real trucks, from the the 1948 to the 2008 -- people tend to skew their attitudes, on average, to what they are most familiar or capable with, not with what is neccessarily better or more capable. Its human nature. I remember early on all the people moaning about Windows (myself included), who wanted to stick with a much simpler DOS.

Look, I'm gonna have to ask you to go ahead, just come back another time. I got a meeting with the Bob's in a couple minutes.
Well said. I think the big reason is people look back so positivly at the ol' 300 is that most of them had the ol 4 speed, and when you compared that set up to a 302 from same era, they mostly had the lazy 4 speed auto, and when you towed with both you realized the 300 seemed to pull better than you'd expect, and the 302 worse that expected. We had a 302 with a 4 speed manual and when you compared the two with the same tranny.... the 302 lived up to the expectations...
Ken- Just out of curiosity, you wouldn't happen to have all of the RPM's where these engines are putting out all these numbers would you? That in itself makes a difference to a lot of people. They feel that the earlier the power comes in on the RPM scale, the better "pulling" engine it is.

It just seems strange to me that if you have an engine tranny setup as strong and long lasting as a 300 with a T18 or NP435, why would you go away from this? Take that 300 and apply even more modern technology to it that has come out in the past 13 years and you would have an engine that would outperform and outlast the 4.2.
I hate Chevy's but look at their new inline 6. It's got something like 285?, right? Thats almost what the new 5.4's have and more than the last bodystyle's 5.4.
Pulled this from the web about chevy's inline 6: " The base 4.2-liter Inline-6 creates 291 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque."
