truck won't stop starting

My truck seems to be backwards this winter. Every once in a while, the truck starts, but alternator stays engaged. I can turn the key off and the engine shuts off, but the starter keeps turning over the engine (even with the key out).

A new starter relay didn't help. The starter is maybe 2 years old. I am guessing there is some problem in the key switch?

If the starter won't disengage, will pulling the small wire off the relay stop the starter and leave the engine running?

Sounds like the key is not returning to the run position.
Removing the small wire from the solenoid should stop the starter from cranking.

But as fast as I say that, I also have to say there is a second solenoid mounted on the starter that may be stuck if you have a Mitsubishi starter.

sounds like the solenoid is bad and not bring the starter shaft back. id send the starter back. ive had my starter in for about 1 year and it is starting to have problems. it wont fully engage all the time , sorta like if you had a tooth missing on the flywheel. its the next fix on my list. plus if you get a starter and it still isnt fixed you can just take it back and tell the store it is the wrong one and you dont want it anymore

You guys are probably right, it is a mitsubishi starter with a second solenoid. I'll try pulling it and getting a new one.

Before I went that route, I would unplug the small wire on the solenoid and check to see if it is a key issue.

The rod that runs down the steering column and activates the switch is known to have a few problems.

my 86, and my 87 f-150 did the same thing, i got mine to stop by hitting the starter relay with a wrench before i got new ones.

It was the starter. Probably the solenoid on top of the mitsubishi starter was bad, as you guys suspected. thanks for all the advice!

If your batteries get low the higher current will weld the contacts in the starter. WHen I worked in the auto electric shop that was very hard to explain to customers.
