need new oil for winter

I need to replace the oil in my '04 350, still using summer "blend" normal oil. I wanna go to a synthetic, 0w40, my brother uses that in his '06 Sprinter van. Is this oil good for my engine as well?

Thanks

Depending where you are located and weather you could go as low as a 30 weight oil 5w or 10w-30 depending on your climate. The 0W-40 (winter) or 5W-40 (summer) are what I use but I do not do a lot of heavy pulling so the engine is not really working hard. If you tow a lot in the summer you may want to stick with a 15W-40 for summer months.
The owners manual specifies oil type depending on climate and I know there was a TSB on that as well but can't locate it right now.

Most folks here use 5W40 synthetic. The more common 5W40's are Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel (Same as Mobil Delvac synthetic), Rotella T Diesel synthetic, Delo 400 synthetic. I currently use Schaeffer 9000 5W-40 and have gotten very good used oil analyses reports. The Schaeffer 9000 is not API certified, if you are concerned w/ your warrantee, use an API certified oil.

In January or so, Motorcraft is promising to come out with their 5W40 synthetic.

Some engines shear the oil under heavy use or extended miles. Many folks recommend not to exceed 5000 miles for the Oil Change Interval because of this shear. I chose Schaeffer 9000 (before I noticed it lacked the API cert) because it held up against the shear exceptionally well. The others do not seem to hold up as well, but should be plenty good for 5000 miles.

In very cold climates, even the 5W oils do not flow as good as your truck would like, so an oil pan heater is always a good idea. Many wire theirs into the block heater cord.

I've always used Rotella's 5W-40 and it does pretty well during the winter months, but we only get down into the teens in the winter and not the negative numbers that many see. I was very impressed with my oil analysis of the 5W-40 last winter as I had almost 6000 miles on it and it still hadn't sheared down to where most 15W40's shear down to and they recommended another 500 miles before an oil change and most of those miles were done towing a large and heavy trailer with a tuner.

I'm curious who carries a 0W40 oil? I've never seen that before. Is it CJ-4 or CI-4+ rated?

I am running ESSO XD3 0W-40. Its available from Wallmart and is reasonably priced for a synthetic. I have a UOA in my galleries, but truck was still in the break in period.
