First Time Diesel Owner
I have only driven Ford PU since 1980 and have been very happy to this point.
My 1997 F350 is very tired and needs a new engine (gasoline).
I think I want to go diesel but have been reading alot of bad feed back.
What is your opinion on a 2006 with only 17,500 miles vers a 2008 with the
new 6.4. Thanks for any feed back.

06' hands down. The 2005 and up Powerstrokes have all the kinks worked out so I would't worry about that. The 06' will let you do alot more in mods and they are road proven. I never reccomend buying any motor in its first model year. Most of all you will save alot of dollars going with the 06'. I love my truck and would never replace it go for it and good luck!!

I would also take the 6.0 over the 6.4.I have never driven the 6.4 so I dont know how different it feels to drive. The extra cash you would have to pay for the 08 and the fact that you need a hoist to do alot of the work on a 6.4 would seal the deal for me.You will fall in love with the ***** the 6.0 has think of a 460 that revs faster and goes more than 250 miles a tank of fuel.

First off welcome to FTE.
The first year or two for the 6.0's was kind of rough. The first year of 6.4 has had some issues but percentage wise seems to be doing a little better than the 6.0 out of the gate. The 05, 06, & 07 6.0's are reliable engines with plenty of power and a reliable history.
Do you plan to do any work on the truck yourself? If so look under the hood of the 6.4 & figure out how you could even change the belt. Several repairs actually involve removing the cab on the 08 models. You also need to make sure ULSD is available anywhere you plan to travel if you go with a new truck. The 6.4 will be phased out in 2010 for the new round of emissions requirements according to the latest rumors.
Just trying to list the pro's & con's as I see them. I've bought a used 06 & a used 07 since the 6.4 came out because I'm not ready to deal with the negatives as I see them. Good luck on your decision.

Get your VIN and run an OASIS!!!! The OASIS report will list all maintenance done by a Ford Dealer to the truck....CarFax won't have the info.
The OASIS report will tell you if your truck is solid or if it's been in the shop and for what.
The OASIS report should be part of your buy/no-buy decision.
Good Luck!

Just bought my 1st diesel. 05 350 CC Lariat with only 10k miles. Not a mark on it. Came of a 2 year lease from an old man. I paid jsut arround 32k for it. We had the exact same 2008 truck in the shop 2 weeks ago and it had a 56k price tg on it. Dont get me wrong, it was a bad @ss truck but for the $$ I am MUCH happier. 1st thing I did was put a set of 2008 20" wheels on it and it looks awesome.
