Need traction advise......

I have a 1990 fullsize Bronco with 32" tires and no lift. I'm not truing to build a rock crawler or a mud warrior, I just want great traction. What should I get fer the front AND rear diffs ? Whats the difference between a Detroit locker and a Detroit soft locker ? Should I go positrack in the rear and Detroit locker in the rear ? I was thinkin this would give the best control, This truck will mostly be used fer the snow. All advise is welcome- Oh yeah, Its got manual front hubs-

a good quality limited slip would be the best for snow in my opinion

I have the powertrax locker in the rear and it works great. It is much better than a limited slip for getting you un stuck. The only complaint that people have with a locker in snow is when you tromp the throttle rear end breaks loose. Of course, lets face it, if you tromp it on a good working limited slip, it will also break loose. The good thing about a locker is you can just idle the truck out of a stuck because both wheels must turn. On a limited slip, you have to apply throttle to get the unstuck wheel spinning. Then you probubly have to much throttle.

i got an 8.8 trac lock off ebay for 100 bucks. its got the big 7/8" crosspin to handle high torque, and it was off an 03 explorer with 15k miles. ive heard a good ford trac lock will lock up pretty tight....

A good opperating trac loc will work fine if you want to spin both wheels with lots of throttle. But if you want to turn both wheels slow on glare ice, the limited slip wont do it. Trac loc's ware out over time. I use to change the clutch pacs every two years on my old Scout. The locker seems to last for ever. My tires will cherp making a turn, but I think thats a good thing. LOL. The soft locker is just a little less agrassive than the detroit. Also, its a little less strong. It will probubly be fine for what you are doing. Sometimes the Detroit will make noises and clunks that make you think the diff fell out.

How is it less strong and less agressive ? I think im going to end up with a Detroit locker, I just dont want it actually cause problems in the snow like making a sharp turn into a driveway uphill......

I think I'm going with a Ford Traction-Lok diff the next time I service my 8.8" Ford. I hope it makes a difference.

I'll second that one, I've got one in (granted its not a bronco) my '93 F-150 and I've not had a problem, it was also out of the newer Xploders.

Also, I've never had any issue getting both tires to turn at low RPMs (first gear low range should be low revs) light throttle to keep the truck from stalling and letting the clutch out in the driveway would get both tires to dig, this is on hard pack road-mix...

I've also used this off-road in the mud and I was very impressed with it, I was hub deep in some nasty mud and I had both tires turning when ever I needed them to.

The Detroit locker is about as strong as you can get without a spool. The soft locker will make less noise on dry pavement. I think it will never break for what you discribe. Now, on a sharp turn hill both will lock up which can cause some trouble in the snow. I must say that a good working Trac lock will work just about the same as a locker. But I've had both and I will never spend the time and money to install a limited slip again.

How is the Detroit Truetrack ? The idea sounds good. How are they in an icy parking lot while making sharp turns ? Anyone ever used one or know of the reputation for dependability/ breakage ? I dont think im going to see any "one wheel in the air" situations, and i dont like the fact that clutches wear-

What do you mean, I've got it down to 5-10 minutes for a swap...
