Hey everyone, Thank You for your input. I really like this site with the intrest and knowledge we all share. My Melling camshaft has a lift of .510 and a 282 duration. If I were to change it out, what kind of lift and duration should I go with to be a strong runner without losing too much low end torque - .530, .550, .570? Comp Cams or Crane Cams or something other? My cobra-jet heads can handle a .600 lift. I can swap out the intake for the RPM and have some head work done. How much horsepower gain can I expect after having these changes made?

Thanks again everyone.

Depends on what cam. And you'll also have to possibly go aftermarket with the rocker shafts if you get too radical a cam. With a lift of no more than .530 or so and a max duration of about 290* (advertised) you'll be OK on the stock shafts, possibly more, I couldn't tell you never having gone bigger with an FE.

I'm not 100% sure of the HP/TQ gains, but it would be noticeable... We ported and polished my dad's heads and then he had the CJ valve's installed and got a RPM intake. He used the Comp 33-230-4 cam which has 280 duration and a .530 lift. It hits good and has good power throughout the power range. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...4&autoview=sku That's a link to the cam on Summit. He went from the performer intake just like you have to the Comp-RPM set up. He just drives the truck once in a while so he didn't want anything to wild. I have drove his and compared it to mine. His don't have the TQ mine does, but still runs VERY well. Hope this helps.....

He still has the stock rockers and shafts installed so that shouldn't be a problem.

What truck is all this in anyway? Transmission? Rear? Tires? Reason I ask is if this is something like an F250, you'd really be wasting money swapping in a hotter cam. F100? That would be a different story.

Give Ken @ Oregon Cam Grinders a call! He will make you a killer cam for your application and more reasonable then Comp or Crane cams. Here is a link:

There are a # of guys that run his stuff and are very happy!!! JMHO

I wouldnt pay much attention to the above Wes's comment.....RandyB that use to run around here and post during his build..Put his 395" er in a 96 F250 junkyard 4X4 and with a Carne RPM cam could still turn over either 38" or 40" tires...

I wonder if he still has his Gallery up? he was running stock edheads , the RPM intake, and the RPM Cam, It was a build that HotRod Rag. Did....and it made 420hp @ the FW... with nothing real special other than bolt ons.....

But Wes is right..I have heard nothing but good things about Oregon Cams..also..I dont have any experience with them..But do know some guys that run the 385 series motors that run there cams and have been quite happy..

Not sure why that cam gets such a bad rap. Its very very similar to a factory 390GT/428CJ cam. In fact, its perhaps a little bit bigger.

Barry Robotnik sells them at Survival Motorsports.

I'd give Barry a call and see what he recommends. He is one of the best FE guys around.

OUCH Russ!!! LOL That hurt man LOL......

We used it in the blown 440 Charger, a solid flat tappet cam From Ken. He custom ground the cam for our application and what we wanted. I cant say enough about Ken. There are quite a few on the Ford FE Forum as well. Your choice and no pressure. Just trying to help out is all and just another avenue to pursue. JMO

Here is a video of when we First got it Running. And we did a lot more tuning and tweaking since then! Enjoy. By the way that is me driving and my son when he was 3 years old LOL

LOL Got ya Russ LOL.

I think a better cam and intake would help out a lot if you ask me! I know some people would say the cam in my 428 that was in my Blue Beast is a little to hot but really not! Dration @ .050 is 228 & 234 on a 110

Way off. Try a low end of 300 hp with the lower comp pistons and 330 hp with the 10.5. This is probably still low since the quotes were only between 3000-3500 rpm depending on model. As for torque try a rating of 425 at 2500 rpm on the 10.5 models. Those quotes are at the flywheel of course.
