Popular Mechanics says yes for the diesel in 2009. It will be a 4.4 derived from the 3.3 used in the Land Rover. It also states that the Land Rover gets 31 mpg highway.
So with a larger engine, US emissions and heavier truck we will be lucky to get 22-25.
So the question is, will it be worth an extra $7000 for this engine? (for the increase in mpg) plus diesel being 30 cents or more higher than gas?
I think it would be cheaper for Ford to give us a Boss with 6 speed and maybe a 2 speed rear end.

I don't see this engine costing $7000 either? You can buy a 6.4 P/S for that. If Ford prices this engine at $7K the F150 would no longer be the best selling truck. You can buy a comparable F250 w/ the 5.4 for about the same as the F-150. Here is my quick math. I drive 24,000 miles a year in my 06 f150 and average 14mpg so over the course of the year I use 1,714 gallons of gas x $3gal. = $5,142 a year and I keep my truck 5 years so I will spend $25,710.00 in 5 years for gas. (Rough Figure)
New truck with 24mpg(speculating) I will use 1,000 gallons of gas x $3gal = $3000 a year x 5 years I keep the truck = $15000 so as long as the new engine is less than $10K it would be worth it for me. I know this is not figuring maintenence but you get the idea.

What if the twin force (6.2 litre turbo charged) is 600 dollar option and gets 20 mpg? plus runs on E-85 which is 2.30 a gallon at 24,000 miles a year 1200 gallons or $2,760 a year. Times 5 years would be 13,800.
Having spent time with the latest V8 diesel Range Rover I can say that it is possible to get 30+ to a gallon being gentle. The differnce is that the imperial gallon is larger than the US gallon, so to be fair may be 27-28 to a US gallon.
The other key compmonent is the 6 speed auto gearbox, this is a clever bit of kit which helps the engine achieve these figure, if Fo Mo Co don't take advantage now they will have missed an opportunity, the other thing you may not realise is that the US is seen by many countries as a major contributor to climate change and having vehicles that run at 15 mpg will become socially unacceptable as time goes on. Behind the scenes the big boys know their product has to go through total rethink within 20 years -----bring on hydrogen cell.
Oh one other thing Fo Mo Co are desperate to sell Land Rover on, so this may be the only time the link with the LR engine can be found, or did LR steel it from Fo Mo Co to start with ?

The problem with your calc. is that diesel is not the same price as reg. UL gas here in the west reg. UL $3.09 diesel $3.80????

Maybe you missed the part that I said rough figure. Here gas is $2.70UL and diesel is about .50 more. Not everyone drives 24000 miles a year so I believe the diesel will not be worth the cost for many people. I would guess this engine will be priced around $4K but I am just guessing.

I am with you unless a person is driving like u do per year the numbers will just not work out, like u I am guessing the diesel option will be around 5K wel will just have to wait and see.??
if ford charges a premum for the diesel(which they will) it will take you at least 10 years to pay for the difference in milage alone. factor in extra maintence and it just doesn't pan out. plus the fact that if half of the new f150 sales are diesel. the demaned of diesel will jump and so to will the price
i believe they have a fuel efficiant trans for the trucks going in production at the sharronville, ohio plant. i believe it is a 6 sp aut. i will find out more info on it.
