Airbag deployment while plowing

Hi all

You must of tagged something pretty Damn hard to set it off ? I know,,cause I plow,,and have thought about that happening,,,while always very careful,,sometimes you get stopped pretty damn short !! Don't think there is a switch,,Not sure if you can pull a fuse though to disconnect ?

you will need someone with a good scanner to disable the air bag system. they are very elaborate and trying to disable them by any other means can cause them to deploy erratically.

a replacement can be had on fleabay, but you are going to have to replace the crash sensor (1 or both depending) in the front as well as the module. this will need to be checked with a scanner regardless.

Hmmmm I would think that pulling the fuse would do it...but then you would have your airbag warning light on the dash always on.

Usually what’s called a clockspring has to be replaced and it’s not an easy job. It’s part of the steering column and is what allows the current to go from the sensors to the bags.

yeah, but you can buy the entire replacement. just unscrew the air bag and put the new one in. but the crash sensor and module will need to be replaced. the only proper way to disable the air bag system is with a diag scanner. the dealership will NOT do this for you. a lot of places will not inspect your vehicle if your air bag light is on.

I've worked on quiet a few and a scanner will not disable the srs system.Even pulling the fuse to repair the systems you have to wait for it to power down.

Well I guess after this you've learned to drive with an extra pair of shorts in the glove box. How long have you been plowing with this truck? I'm kind of wondering if something isn't set up right in the plow. This is the first time I've heard of something like this.

i am not talking about the $200-$300 ones. A snap-on or one of the sort. When I was working on my mom's lincoln, i had my buddy that works at a stealership bring the dealer one out. he disabled the system and also pulled one of the control units to be extra safe.

you are correct about the powering down though. they recommend you wait at least 15 minutes after disconnecting the battery to avoid accidental deployment.

I have never heard of this either. You should double check the plow setup, or just fess up to how fast you were going when you hit that wall j/k

Ive been plowing for three years with this truck. Honestly i was only going 10-20mph. My step son is painter at a dodge dealer and he has someone to do the work. Also i pulled off my front licsense plate ( one plastic screw was broke). Good thing I wasnt wearing a watch because my left wrist slammed me in the forehead. Time would have been inprinted on my forehead lol.

When I was learning about airbags I was told as a “general rule” they’ll go off between 12.5 and 25mph depending on what you hit. Of course that also means you have to hit the thing going in the right direction (a side impact won’t likely deploy a front airbag).

I don’t know what kind of sensors Ford uses. They work differently too depending on what you hit. If you hit an immovable object (think brick wall), they will go off at a slower speed than if you hit something that has more give (a giant made out of marshmallow).

A lot of times the sensors are on the frame rail, so if you were traveling pretty much straight, at 10 – 20mph and hit something pretty solid, say a large rock (boulder, or curb) you could have your airbag go off if the snowplow mount is near the sensor.
