Don't know if this applies to you in your case but my son bought a new Taurus a few years ago and they could not get the pinging to go away unless prem. fuel was used. The dealer service dept would say nothing was found, pour in a can of octane boost and set them on their way. I found out on one of the forums that a bad mass air flow sensor can cause this. My son and daughter in law was so upset by this time that they invoked the lemon law and got Ford to take it back!! A few months later there was a recall on Ford Taurus for the mass air flow sensor!!! Can't hurt to try this.

You know KRB I was browsing through my service manual on DVD for 04 V-10 and under diagnosing problems there is a section on pinging and the Maf sensor is mentioned as one of the possiblities. I believe it also mentions vacume leaks, EGR valve leaks, and the knock sensor.

The knock sensor is located under the intake manifold...between the manifold and the engine block. This is true for all '99-'04 V10 2v engines.

Hope this helps...

Okay, I replaced both O2 sensors this past Saturday. Drove it to work today (22 miles). I had to watch the speedo the entire time or I'd end up flying low. I've always been able to ignore the speedo and do 55-60mph on a 2 lane road. Suddenly I can't hold it below 70mph. Wish I had replaced these at 30k when my truck started misbehaving, had no idea they could or should go bad that early. I have 108k on the clock now, between the 02 and the fuel filter it's like a new truck, time for plugs/boots again and it should be at least as good as new after that.

Hey Budman1962,

I bought the Bosch upstream O2 sensors from advance auto with the ~16" pigtails. I only ran about a 100 miles on them out of the 300 on the tank but I was up to 14mpg from 13.5mpg (all hand calculated). I be quite interested to see what happens milage wise when I get through an entire tank (and I'm back on 87 octane for the current tank). I'm hoping that the knock stays away on 87 finally.
