Service engine soon is annoying me

ok its me again and i bought my L last tuesday and about two days later the check engine light came on while i was driving. ok well, i took it back the dealership and they said it came on because of the aftermarket exhaust, its a flowmaster exhaust by the way. i bought the truck from augusta dodge in augusta georgia lol thats where i stay...but i took the truck straight to the big ford dealership around here and they said that was true if it was an aftermarket exhaust on the truck and plus if the cats were also oof because the computer doesn't recognize the exhaust..sooo i was wondering was this really true because the truck drives good and i'm getting better gas mileage than in my 1999 4X4 lariat..but my boy ace555 on this site told me that i could just take the check engine light off with a tuner which i'm thinking about getting and doing really soon

If its just a cat-back exhaust it shouldn't have any effect. On the other hand, if the any of the cats were removed or altered and nothing was done to compensate for this tune wise, it would likely throw a light.

You can read and clear trouble codes with a handheld tuner. You could also turn off your rear O2 sensors (with some handhelds) , assuming they are causing your troubles.

....orgo back to the dealer that sold it to you.

They can not sell a truck or car that has had emissions or safety equipment removed.

You can make them put the cats back on. Period. Even if it is out of warranty, they sold it without the proper emissions in place.....unless you removed them.....

Also, a progammer is great, but you need no less than your upstram cats/o2 sensors in place....otherwise, you run the risk of running lean....

8up i could put a piece of tape over it lol but nah...yeah i bought the truck as it is..so is it better for a lightning to have the cats on? or does it really matter with gas mileage because it seems like i'm getting good gas mileage for averaging 280-300 miles a tank..and the people at the dealership are kinda iffy about the truck because right now they just dont want me to take it back..but i know one thing they better set my appointment up for them to check it out...and another thing they still owe me my navigation disc

Yep. It is illegal for them to sell a vehicle with altered emissions. They face huge fines if the right folks get a bee in their bonnet. They either have to replace the cats or buy the truck back from you.
This is the way it was when I worked at the dealer in 1999, at least. That info came straight from our legal department. We had the very same situation on a used vehicle that we took on trade. A customer noticed the missing cats before it was prepped and questioned it. In that case, we had to install cats before the truck could be advertised or sold.

Your local laws regarding "as is" sales are going to have some influence on whether or not they have to do anything for you. As a general rule, I would say they owe you a set of cats. However, if they aren't required to do that in your area and you start spouting off laws that don't exist you might find yourself in trouble instead of them.

Tell them it will be cheaper for them to install 2 aftermarket high flow cats than it would be to replace the original y-pipe with 4 cats on it.
