I just had the GFI breaker trip on the outlet to my 2005 F350. Our local road commission had sprayed potassium acetate on the roads, and am pretty sure this is what got between the extension cord and the block heater. Pulled it in, thawed it out and cleaned the cord connection. It is about 0 Deg F and if it doesn't work, will be late getting into work.

This potassium acetate solution works to keep the roads free of ice. It is also great for sales of wind shield washer fluid and painting your vehicle a brown.... Yuk!

How are the plugs on those cords (both the end of the block heater and the extensions)? If you build up enough corrosion on there, it'll pop a GFI. We hear stories about it from hands further north. They just take some fine grit sandpaper and polish up the plugs when it becomes a problem. I've never heard tell of people pulling off the block heater cords right there at the engine block, though. They just do the male ends on the cords.

I use a 3 way plug that was tends to ground out from the potassium acetate spray, road spray. The F350 also has a block heater and if recall correctly, it takes special plug in extension cord on the 6.0L diesel. It will probably be awhile before I will get up the motivation to crawl under there look. It -14F this evening here in Eagle River Alaska. Best of the Holidays.

It is just weird that it all happaned 1 day(not the next day) after I drove through a snow storm and it started getting really cold. I really want to thank all of you for your help, this website is the best and I will definetly become a supporter soon, have a great holiday

I have had the same problem with my 05 and just took it to Ford and they replaced the cord with a new one. Last week I got home and it would blow the gfi. Crawled under and moved the cord around and it started to work but the next day it did the same thing. Since they replaces the cord I have yet to have it happen.

Easy fix. Plug somethin else into the GFCI and see if it trips if it doesn't then something is wrong on the truck side. EX. cord or the heater itself. Seems to me you found the problem yourself by plugging it into the kitchen GFCI and it tripped that too so it is either the cord or the heater. My suggestion get it fixed before you get wrapped on your truck.

I have used the cord on other things, so it has to be the truck. I will be calling my dealer soon and get it in there.

I had trouble with the GFI kicking out too...I bought a new heavy duty extention cord and the problem went away.
