I think it's located near the driver's side motor mount.

Factory remans have a tag that says they were rebuilt. But im sure if you had one you;d have noticed that lol. Ive never looked but I believe its on the drivers side, either by the motor mount like mudguts said or below the head.

It will have a casting number on the block,, not the vin number.

What number or letter links it to the truck itself

That, im not sure about. If these are anything like classic muscle cars, there must be a source somewhere. Maybe contact a dealership and give them the vin#? Or go to one of the online vin runners and see if it says.

As far as I know there is no way to tell if the engine block c/n is the original one for the truck. There may be a database that matches block c/n with vehicle VIN, but I doubt it's public. Ford dealer may be able to look it up for you. VIN has a code it it to tell you which engine it was equipped with, but nothing to match it up with a specific block.

IIRC there is no real link between casting numbers and a specific vehicle as far as fords are concerned.
