6-speed Transmission noise

Ok, this may have already been discussed but I wasn't sure. I havent been on the forums for a lil while now and figured I'd ask about it.

I have an 08 F250 manual transmission 6.4 and when you let out of the clutch sometimes in neutral it will give a rattle, almost like the throw out bearing is going or gone. Well I took it in to make sure there was nothing wrong and they thought it was the same,( I think Im the only one to have one with a manual transmission at this dealership) lol. But they got back to me the next day and said they have a print off of a SSM. its 505000 - Driveline Manual Trans Concerns or 19887. Saying it has a characteristic of a rattle due to a neutral gear rollover noise (light metallic rattling sound from the transmission) which occurs at idle with transmission in neutral or clutch engaged. This noise results from constant mesh gears turning at idle speed and is inherent to manual transmissions.

My concern was for a 40some thousand dollar truck I don't think that a rattle noise should be any where near being a characteristic! It says it will not affect driveability or durability of the transmission. Effective 7/26/2007

Anyone else experience this or know anything about this?

Thumbs down

its because the new transmmissions dont use gear oil in them anymore they use

automatic trans fluid in them so you have more rattle to hear because of thinner

fluid great idea wasnt it. dodge did the same thing and you cant even get a straight drive in a duramax anymore only auto.

yup, thats right! Blame is on the ATF... in my 99 i thought there was a misprint in the owners manual for fluid spec for the 6 speed tranny, untill i drained for the first time to change the oil and seen that its was in fact ATF... Better for cooling the transmission. I hear the same noise in my 99, and i have well over 200,000 on it. Change the oil in the trans and transfer case about once a year (30-60,000 miles per year) and the oil looks as good as the day i put it in.

Have the same noise in my 08 6-speed. Brought it to the dealership after two days and they had no idea. Good to know it's nothing major.

I think they call that gear rollover or something like that. Its normal as far as I can tell. I think its the transmissions way of letting you know its still there. I also have some kind of noise in my 04 on the first clutch push in of the morning, kind of a klunk. Its done it from day one, but i have had no problems at all.

Is this your first manual in a super duty diesel? Yes the ATF, gear rollover, and cheap plastic throw out bearing can contribute to noise, but if you crawl under your truck and look at the size of that transmission you'll be surprised you don't have more gear noise.
